I just found out that the spine that I set on my rod is about 15 percent off center! or another way to explain it is that the reel seat hood is at the 3 O'Clock position intead of at the 12 O'Clock postion and it wants to move to it's center spine postion everytime. So is this a problem that needs to be fixed or should I just leave it as it is.

If the rod is built on the straighest axis and the reel seat lines up with the guides I wouldn't mess with it. I build everything on the straightest axis and ignore spine

Not that I know anything about rod building, but everything I have read sofar that is current, says that spine is not an issue anymore. I would go with what Stick says.

When you sight down a blank you will soon see that it isn't straight. The straighest axis with the one where the tip doesn't go down, left or right of the center line. I chuck a blank up on the lathe using only one rod support and turn it to watch the other end of the section. I made a card with cross hairs like in the Rodmaker Magazine article and mark top dead center when the end isn't right, left or down of center.

Nothing worse that looking down your rod and the tip yaws off to one side or the other.

Stickfish, which issue was that in? I have only recently started rodmaker mag, but will likely buy some back issues. Thanks!
Currently I check for spine and look at the blank for straightest axis to decide guide orientation. Although there are very good arguments that spine is not really an issue. I learned that way and it only takes a few minutes to do. If I had already epoxied the reel seat on I doubt I would go to any trouble to move it.
What do you mean by "it wants to move to it's center spine position every time"?

Volume 11 Issue 5 - you will want that one for the article on Abalone veneer.
