Not that I think I'll do any better trying for Springers, but with talk of them making it into the rivers has piqued my curiosity. Have any of you fly guys/gals targeted them with a fly and what kind of success? I must admit the thought of a 30lb fish on a fly rod has me salivating!
Cheers,
Brent

Brent Email me. Dead drifting is easy, you just have to hit them in small water. Swinging however is a bit more difficult. It is possible though and there is possibilities not to far away from you.

Snap-T,
I agree with you in that it is much easier to fish for kings in small water. I fish for them just as if I was fishing for trout with a nymph. This is especially effective on the coast. Last fall was really good when the rains finally arrived. The fish moved in quickly and would stop for a brief period in the shallow, fast moving riffles before heading up to the next deep hole. I did get lucky enough to land a 35lb king on an 8wt. It did take a while to get in, but was really fun to fight. Gave it to a guy on the bank that wanted to smoke it. I will try to post the picture, although the guy that took the photo did not do a very good job of taking the picture. Still a great memory none the less.

Hey Snap:
Sounds like you have caught a few springers on the fly before. How would you like to give me a lesson? I sure enjoyed watching you "pound the steelhead" on the last trip. Any chance that we can make a trip together soon? Steelheading up here has really been slow. After the great year that we had last year, its hard to go out and be blanked. I broke another rod (second one in 3 trips)  I guess that I'll have to start "targeting" smaller fish   I miss fishing with you Son. Brit is doing well...but "howls" on the bank and tries to swim out to you when wading.
Love Dad

I "targetted" the spring chinook on the lower Clackamas last year. It was the next logical step up for me. I have spent a lot of years not catching the large redsides on the Deschutes. More recently I have spent considerable time not catching summer and winter steelhead, which are usually larger than even the Deschutes redsides.
I understand the springers in the Willamette system might be a higher percentage of four or five year fish this year, so this spring I expect I will not catch even larger spring chinook than the ones I did not catch last year.

All I can say is that I had one break my fly after 20m min of fighting on the South Santiam. But their hard to get youve got to hit them in the head sometimes.....It just isnt right :hoboy: ......

Springers can not be taken on flies. Steelhead can not be taken on flies. Large trout can not be taken on flies.

Uh...Grantspastor, Jesus is watching you.
For penance, you could post a picture of the flies they don't take...

You're right Skein. I need to quit fibbing about this. I'd be glad to tell you which flies, but then I'd have to kill you. You can see the moral dilemna it creates for me.
