I am no expert on building rods, but if my rod was a 9ft 6wt and it breaks and is now about 8ft does it in effect become a ?? 7-8 wt. I hope this is making sense to you guys... thanks for the help

My guess is more like 6-7 wt.

If I was going to keep it and not fix it other than a new tiptop, I'd try 7 and 8 wt lines on it. If you have the piece it may be fixable with some grinding, an insert, some Flexcoat and an extra wrap over the break. I've seen people put a new tiptop on after loosing up to six inches, but foot is a lot to lose.

Airborne, I think I'd just take my lumps and let my 7 year old use it to slap the water OR put new guides on it, flip it over and use it as a spinning rig. Loosing a whole foot, you've lost the better part of the action unless its a super duper fast blank.

A tip top is about $3. I would try it out, it could end up being a nice bass/big fly rod.

It's a nice older SA rod all glass and has been a great rod, only now it's about 8" shorter, I put on a new tip, but was not sure if it would cast the same weight line or not. Im thinking I should put on about a 8 wt. I think it was a 7 before the car got it.
