I have a 15 Johnson on the back of a 16' Alaskan - and thinking of replacing it with a 25 4-cycle Merc. I think the extra weight can be managed (good tip on the fuel tank in a thread on this discussion), but curious if going from a 15 to 25 will be apparent. Anybody with a 16' Alaskan smokercraft have a motor this size and weight and have something to say?

Thanks in advance,
John

A friend of mine and I both have 16' smokercraft Lodge SS. Mine with a 2 stroke 25 merc, his with a 4 stroke. Mine would get up on plane faster, but otherwise were pretty much the same. Not sure about going from a 15 to 25, but would assume you would notice a positive gain.

You will notice a definit difference in several ways. You are gaining 40% in horsepower. It may troll better depending on prop selection. Power will be noticably improved. You will be real happy in my opinion. My 15 foot Alaskan is rated for 40 horse max and I bet yours is atleast this possibly more. My financial advisor (AKA my wife) has warned of the dangers of making such an investment and the 25 Merc 2 stroke is doing well. If I were in the market I would consider Evinrude E Tec. Go for it. My two cents worth, no charge.
See you out there

I'm surprised my FA approved this! Stupid question - are all dealships that sell motors the same? I don't know how the boat motor undustry ticks, and wondering if all folks have a fixed price or if their is room to negotiate - just like cars.....thoughts?

I have a 25hp Merc 2-stroke on the back of my 16ft. Sylvan, and I can get it on plane (barely with 4 men in it). With just me it goes about 33 mph.

Is your 15hp a 2-stroke? If so you will most notice how nice and quite 4-strokes are. And they troll down much more smooth. I am want it. I have a 15hp 2-stroke on a 15' Alaskan.

I had a 2-stroke 15.

I purchased a brand new Honda 20 and gave it a break-in run at Hagg Lake on Friday. The first two hours are behind me, so except for going full-throttle more than 5 minutes at a time, I can use it for fishing now.

Runs great - trolls great, and plenty of power to push the 16-footer. Starts easy, no smell, and quiet. Consider me a happy camper! Now I just need work to settle-down so I can use the darn thing. Pictures in the newspaper showing the springers was a tease!

i have a 93 pro alaskan its 15 1/2 feet and i have a 60/40 jet on the back..weights 222 lbs...and a 6 hp kicker and no problems what so ever.....boat squats a bit in the rear but I poured a bunch of extra foam in for the extra bouancy. I am pretty sure a 16 ft alaskan is rated at least 40hp . I know mine is rated for up to 40 hp.
