...........Which is a 9.9 Yamaha, 1995. A question came up I'd like to throw out.
Was doing this, and was squeezing a tube of fresh gear oil in the lower hole, waiting for the oil to appear in the upper hole-- which I am told that indicates its full.
Well, it wouldn't take any more oil, and it hadn't come out the top yet. So I put the screw back in the lower hole, and tried to fill from the upper hole. Which of course didn't work well, because now there is no place for the air to displace to.
So, to get it full, could a guy take a syringe and pump it in the top hole that way? I know it would be slow and a PITA, but I want to make sure I have the thing full. Ideas???

How do you know it won't take any more oil?
If its not coming out the upper hole, that would lead me to think it wasn't full.

you could use a syringe, the size used for kids medicine and get it full. might take a while but will be less mess. I seem to recall that I did it that way 2 years ago on my Honda 15.

Mooch--
I agree-- I don't think it was full. But when I squeezed on the tube, I could not force any more in the hole-- it would just blow out on the ground (which was quite a mess).
So why couldn't I force any more in the hole, if it was not coming out the top? Its a question I also have.

As far as not being able to get any more in and a no show at the top I think you are filling too fast and creating an air lock ...
When changing the gear oil always fill from the bottom to the top ...
I use a Lower Unit Quart Pump that fit on a plastic quart bottle of gear oil ...
The hose has a fitting that is threaded , you screw it into the lower hole and slowly pump until it comes out the top ...
Replace the top screw first (with new gasket) and then unscrew the pump from the bottom fitting and replace the drain screw (with new gasket also ) and your done ... Heres the pump I use you can get adapters for any outboard ...

Fishkisser--
Look like a neat tool, and I will pick one up.
But can you create a problem if you fill from the top down??

Filling from the top down will not allow all the air to escape from the gear box ...
The heavy gear lube will stop flowing down as cohesion from surfaces slow it down till it stops as the air wants to go out the top hole ...
If you let it sit overnight all the trapped air would eventually make its way up to the top ...
Filling from the bottom up Slowly pushes the air to the vent (top screw hole) with nothing in its way you fill the void completely ...

For future reference, buy the pump. I did the lower unit on my kicker with a tube years ago and it's a major pain. I bought the pump and yearly maintenance takes a whopping ten minutes minus drain time and that's doing both motors.
There's no reason you couldn't use a syringe to finish off your job. I used a small piece of copper tubing jammed into the tip of the lube tube that left airspace around the screw hole for venting.

Additionally you can buy a gallon of lower gear oil for $11.00 at Clemens and along with a pump your set for a while.
Did both my engines last weekend under 1 hour for upper and lower oils.
Tubes are a gimmick, overpriced and messy

when using the tube you have to push it in the fill hole hard and squeeze as hard as you can on the oil tube.
