Hello Everyone,

I am looking for a round head jig mold and found some Do-it molds at a local store. As I am new to this on the Do-it website they say the molds use Eagle Claw 575 & 570 Aberdeen jig fishing hooks. If I do buy this mold am I stuck using Eagle Claw hooks? I like to use Gamakatsu hooks so do I have to look for a differant jig mold? If you know of a mold model number that will work please let me know of it. I like to use the 1/8 jig heads but want one with more than one size in it like maybe 1/16 and 1/8. Thank you for any help.

You can use what you want as long as it's the same wire size, bend/eye position.

I pour my own shad darts. The mold asks for size 2 for the 1/8oz dart. I have used from size2 hooks from different manufactures, matzuo, gamakatsu, etc..., down to size8 hooks. As long as you can fit the hooks inside the circle for the hook eyes and the diameter of the hook shank fit into the slotted line, it should be fine.

If you happen to misplaced the hook or the hook shank diameter is too big, you will have runny lead hanging from the jig body. Just remelt the lead and recast with the exact placement and smaller shank diameter.

Some of the more stout hooks like the Gamis and Owners are heavy wire and would require a little modification of the mold but it can be doen easily. If you are making Salmon/Steelhead jigs than it might be worth it. I tend to stay away from the Eagle Claw and Mustad hooks because the can get straightened by a nice fish and that can be very frustrating.

So say with a little file or sand paper you can make the hooks fit in the mold. Thanks for the idea

Yes on the mold website it says

Eagle Claw 575 & 570 Aberdeen jig fishing hooks. The most popular freshwater jig fishing hook. Made with flexible tempered wire, so if the hook becomes snagged, it will bend rather than break.

Thanks everyone for the info.

Do-it makes more than one round head jig mold, some take light wire aberdeen (eagle claw 570-575) hooks, some take O'shaughnessy (eagle claw 630-635) heavy wire hooks. Look on their web site for Round Head Heavy Hook models. You can order directly off their site.
