I have been researching outboard power choices on a new welded aluminum boat I am considering buying. It seems that some dealers and people tell me that a yamaha F150 will be "enough" power but will have better gas milage then the 6 cylinder upgrade to the F200. On the other hand some people say the bigger engine is better because it works less hard. All the real data I see on actual tests point to at least as good milage on the larger engine at the 30 mph cruising speed(my usual). Are the few dealers that I am talking to pushing the F150 (price point) just simply not telling the truth about the fuel savings or am I missing something? In truth it does seem like at lower (10MPH) there may be some savings on the smaller motor. In short, if you can afford it go for the larger engine because fuel savings is not any worse. What do you guys think?

What length boat, open sled or windshield, approximate weight, propped or pump, what manufacturer?

I think if you go online to the Yamaha site they actually have performance tests on your exact boat with the motor choices you are looking at.

I just put the 150 on the same boat and its plenty.

the 150 on your boat will be plenty if its in your budget go up to the 200/225/250. I run the F250 and it sips fuel at cruise on my 25' sled

I just went down the same path. After being on several friends' boats, buying the gas, and weighing all the options, I just chose the Yami 150 for a NR 22'.

With the correct prop, it will go as fast as offshore conditions allow, and be very well balanced at trolling speeds (I really want to avoid any tendency toward being 'stern heavy').

I put a F-150 on my 20' NR scout with 5 guys and all our gear never had a power problem seems to get good milage too. I love my Yami

I have 21 ft Northriver Seahawk, with a Yamaha 150 and I have been loaded down out the ocean...and love it. No problems, plenty of power, cruises at 30 mph, very good on fuel consumption.

For me , I would need a lot of good reasons to not go with the 200. Much rather have 50 more horses back there when I want it or need it.

The 200 will burn more fuel. On a 19 or 20 foot boat, a Yamaha 150 compared to a 115 burns less fuel in my experience, but it's also of a similar displacement, and each are 4 cylinder engines. More displacement and more cylinders = more fuel burned, everything else being equal, which it never is. Going from the 150 to a 200 is a more significant step.

Sure, the engine won't have to work as hard, but newer 4 strokes seem to last forever anyway.

Go as big as the money allows:)

The only thing I'd be concerned about is what the extra 120lbs the 200 brings into the equation.

If the boat will take the bigger engine and won't affect the handling,I'd probably go with the 200.

I vote 150. Great Outboard.
