I have a 40hp mercury 1994. I’m going to install a water fuel separator in line between the fuel tank and the motor. My question is do you have to have the separator at the same level as the gas tank or below the gas tank. I was thinking about mounting it to my center console. This would place the separator about 1’ above the bottom of the fuel tank. I wanted to mount it on the back transom but I have 4 batteries, a 3 bank charger, a wash down pump, and all the controls for the center console. So I’m running out of room on the transom. Any help would be great.

I have a sport jet and the separator is mounted about 6 inches above the fuel tank
I don't think it matters much as long as when you change filters you fill the new filter with fuel
Otherwise the fuel pump is straining to suck fuel from the tank to fill the new filter

Make sure you mount it well above the fuel tank, otherwise when you take the filter off gas will siphion out of the tank. Don't ask how I know this.

Is this necessary? My filter is 4 - 6 inches above the top of my tank and I haven't had any issues when changing my filter.

My tank is up front to add some weight when I run solo.

I don't think this is a highjack because it's related. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.....

How often do you guys change the water / fuel separator?

On an 18' Hewescraft the W/F separator is mounted 12"-plus above the fuel tank'

I change it out about every 8 months.

I write the date and motor hours on the filter to help me keep track of the interval.

2 X per year, also use a good quality marine grease on the threads and the base and gasket, I use OMC triple guard.

Do you need a separator for a 2 stroke? I assume it is a 2-stroke since it is a 1994 model.

Yep I did Tinman but I got one this weekend and all ready installed it. I have a friend that might want one though. Did you have one to sell?

Sorry, I was not very clear. What I meant is I don't think 2-strokes need to have water separators at all. As far as I know, 2-strokes can burn a little water without problems.

I did not mean I had a water separator to sell. Sorry for the confusion.

Do you think it would still be a good idea to run one on a 2 stroke.

yes, especially with the ethanol fuel.

I was actually pondering on installing one on my 85HP Merc 2-stroke....After some issues with my 25HP this year I think I'm going to install one before Sturgeon season on the bigger boat.

Ethanol sucks up moisture like a sponge. I wouldn't be without one. I also use marine stabil for ethanol. Check it out (http://doitbest.com/Main.aspx?PageID=64&SKU=575112&utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=FREECSE&utm_term=575112&utm_content=6790&utm_campaign=DATAFEED). :twocents:

Do I need to replace the water seperator filter or just empty it out on occasion?
