Are the fish gorged out? Also is the hatch moving around as the weather's heat picks up?Might be a little too late to tie up some flies may do it on the run, have a traveling kit for emerging patterns. Any info or suggestions will help. I am looking at FAOL (fly anglers on line) for ideas as I always use what others suggest. One of favorites up Billy Chinook is Blank Ant.

I am going to be there thursday staying at Lake Simtustus and trying for kokanee as well in the lake neve had any on a fly pole. Has anyone ever heard of flies for kokanee? Most everyone gets upset when I am out in the boat and start whipping flies around when it is slow trolling.

Yes FRGuy, thanks for reminding me I do vaguely remember that Paulina Kokanee report as well. What hook size for that shrimp pattern ? I usually get some Kokanee in the 12 range, always wanting more, and they are the best eating. Will let you know whether the sinking line verses the floating and how well it will be working out for me.

Last year I remember reading a report on the Kokanee page about a fellow who early in the morning was catching rising kokanee at Paulina. I also worked with a man that fished CP alot and when the trout fishing was slow he would move to the Deschutes channel by the campground and fish black chrominid slow near the bottom. And I have a friend that last year at East lake was fishing a shrimp type pattern for Atlantic Salmon and also pick-up Kokanee that way.

Keep an eye for fish rising under trees as well. My barber said that there is a salmon fly hatch on lake Simtustus. The water is moving fast enough up in the narrows so I suppose it is possible.

Let us know how you did. There are some big Kokanee in that lake.

Salmonflies are no longer flying around all over the place near Maupin. I didn't see any hanging on the grass just upstream from town this evening. I did manage to nail four nice fish on the rattiest Clark's Stone you've ever seen. The hackle is almost gone and the deer hair wing is down to three or four strands. The polypro underwing is still there. It looks like a strike indicator with a hook hanging under it, but it still has the mojo. Caddis time is upon us.

My late report for Deschutes is slow as unpacking & cleaning up camping equipment is a chore. Nonexistant was the bite for me on the Deschutes and so moved to the lakes. Kokanee weren't hitting the shrimp patterns, caddis, mosqito or ant early or late bites. Wind and some rain made fly fishing difficult. The most fun was getting the bigger pike minnows on the fly pole. Those lakes have some big pike minnows saw some 5-6 lbers pulled out by some guys in a drift boat working the edges. Salmon flies were hatching and flying in the arms of the lakes, but didnt get any fish with the effort. Switched to some trolling to get bites and fish. I saw some 3 lb Kokes caught at 50ft with downriggers.

Ok Will-e-fish,

You have got my blood going now about 3 lb kokanee. Was that in lake Simtustus? I figured that some would be 2+ lbs, but 3!!! That would have to be a 20+ inch fish.

Were many kokanee taken while you were there. I have been thinking hard about heading back to that lake soon, like this weekend.

Sorry for not replying to your inquiry about fly size. I think they were 12s or 14s. Thanks for getting back.

3 pound Kokanee? That was a Mackinaw fry, not a kokanee. Unless the rainbows were hitting jigs at 50 feet. The state record for Kokanee was probably broken over and over and over again that day.

That is right a 3 pound kokanee a short fat hen,at Simtustus, looked like some the smaller jack salmon I get here and there. He caught it not on a jig or fly. Caught by a guy named whiskers who usually lands Kokes in that range. Mind you the 50 foot depth with a downrigger trolled. Wedding ring with corn dont know the rest of details whether it was green or red. After talking with Homer the most gracious RV host and seeing pictures of his 41/2 pound kokanee. Homer told me he should have had that catch mounted.

Many large koke in the 16 to 17 were the norm and many fish in the lake and all over the lake. Most concenttrate on log boom up toward B.Chinookearly in AM as later they staart letting out water and the current gets strong. I am heading back there to try the fly again when the wind may be calmer. Go to Lake Simtustus RV and see Homer at the tackle shop. He can give the kokanee scoop but not too much on the fly info.

I was there last weekend and saw lots of fish rising, especially in the AM down by the dam. There were PMDs and some golden stones floating on the water. Even some risers mid-day.

Fished for kokes at Odell on Mem. Day Weekend. Our group caught three Macks over 30" while jigging for Kokes. Just a surprise for us all. One guy had one on for almost 20 minutes on 8 pound line before it finally broke off. Not bad for kokanee fishing. Got to see a pic of the 3lb koke though.

FR Guy- when I was there it was incredible with rising fish and different anglers had their own ideas on what they were, Homer the host at Simtustus said a% is pike minnow and white fish. But watching them, I know the trout and Koke were hitting the top too. As I said I did not have much success with the flies I had used. I think the mid day jumpers were trout.

PittsburghD- fighting Macs in Odell busting 8lb line I got to go try that. What was the color of jig? the Kokanee at Simtustus seem to like pink over green or silver. I am sure if you make it to Simtustus RV and ask Homer he will show you his pictures of the bigger Kokanee. I did not get any .

Wow, that looks like a really old herring! Or maybe a brooder trout. Looks like the Umpqua half pounders. I am impressed. What the heck was I doing at Odell?

Anyway the jigs were some half green and some half pink with corn soaked in shrimp oil. I don't think it really matters that much. Just the right time in the right place. We used crippled herring, buzz bombs, and like.

FallRiver Guy - yeehaw nice fish! That lake Simtustus will always be a suprise as to what you can pull out. Good thing all the people from the valley think it is too far or dont know where it is. Care to tell us if you got it on top or deeper? I want to go back with sinking line and try a few more tricks for those silver beauties. It is gonna be tuough my fishing partner doesnt lke the heat as much as I do. I am going to tie up some shrimp patterns on a 14 hook and fish it deeper, especially in the canyon where my ff goes nutz.

Will-e-fish,

That one was caught first of May. At that time the fish were at the surface and just under. That fish was taken 5 feet down.

Two weeks ago the fish were at 40-55 feet down. The fish were deeper near the dam and shallower up in the narrows.

Hope your tricks work. Them is some fine eaten fish.
