We've heard the stories about mercury's oil injection systems failing due to the plastic gear that strips out. Has anyone done any preventitive maintenance and replaced this plastic gear before it fails? Is this a DIY project or is this gear buried in the injection system?

I got oil injection in my Merc, but add about 150 to 1 in the tank just in case so I can idle back if injection fails. Not fool proof but a comforting for me.

The early 175 sportjets had a recall. I stopped in to check if mine needed it. To my surprise it had already been done in Dec 2000.
It was explained to me it was simply a bushing that needed to be changed out because it had a tendancy to expand and bind the oiler gear driven by the crankshaft.

Mine is a 1998. Probably the last year of the recalled motors.

Mine was a 89 and it failed. Plastic gear is on the crank and Big money to replace. There was rust on the pump gear that sure didn't help anything. I disconnected all the alarms and mixed the gas until the pistons exploded a year or so later.

Did they fix that? I have a 92 sea dory with a 115 merc with a pump and its oil injected, does this motor have the possibility for the same oil injection falure? and if so where do I take it to have it checked to make sure that everything is still working ok?
