Echoing some of the sentiments from earlier Deschutes posts, it a pure pleasure just being on the river. At times it seems like a chore to find the time and drive an hour to fish for the evening, but once on the river, it is all worth it. Now, the fishing.............Fished the Warm Springs/Mecca area and the first spot we got to around 4:30, we found some fish looking up, and after missing three takes to dries we moved on. The next spot we switched to nymphs and were able to land three or four apiece, with just as many lost. Fished with big stones and droppers of beadhead princes and pheasant tails, with the droppers catching all the fish. About an hour and a half before dark, decided to switch back to dries and was able to generate some interest from about half a dozen fish each. The fish weren't really coming up on their own, but seemed willing to take a well present imitation. And while there weren't many bugs on the water, for about 20-30 minutes, at around 8:45, the sky was literally filled with stones. It seems like maybe its getting ready to explode. So, overall, not great, but fairly good for a quick afternoon of chasing redsides.
Good report. The Deschutes has been hot for me over the last couple of months. I have been there the last 6 weekends, and am really racking up the numbers in the old fishing log. Again, thanks for the report.

Just ZaQ, you must not be married or have a girlfriend and don't like to fish for springers. JK, but six straight weekends? Holy cow! I love the Deschutes and live less than an hour away and have only been twice this year, which is as many times as I've driven all the way to Drano to fish for springers. I think the hatch is going to get real good soon though, and I will be out a few more weeknights in the next couple of weeks. I'll post more reports then.

As for dries, I had most of my success with something like the MacSalmon, with some variations we've made over the years, as well as my own version of the Clark's Stone. What's the Norm Wood Special you referred to? Couldn't find it in the 'Westfly' directory.

Thanks for the report Blackdog (and Zaq). Since we're talking salmonflies, which dries were you tempting them with?
On the days when the pattern matters, the Clark Stone in my first choice, I am coming to more and more respect the Norm Wood Special.
What's your (or anyone else') opinion?
A friend and I did well there on Monday and Tuesday as well. Mecca Flats and downstream about 2 1/2 miles.
Normwood special was a winner, as was a smaller yellow stimulator for the goldens. Extended body foam stones were also good in the evenings.
Best bet is to concentrate on the fast, riffly water that's 2-5 feet deep. At least for us. We didnt' catch many in the slower eddies.
Watch out for SNAKES! We saw 4 rattlers between us, all down in the shade on the riverbank. 2 were small, with just the nub of a rattle, the other two were a bit bigger, but didn't rattle until we could see them. Nothing to worry about, just keep an eye out for them.
