Well lets get this site going with some good topics for us flea flickers....
So what is your favoite summer s/h flies.
I like the muddler and the green butt skunk for a few of the local streams that I frequent.
I sometimes fish the muddler behind a smaller (size 6 gbs) and have had fish grab the gbs which is about 18" above the muddler.

Gee Gizmo:
I like Dee flies in #8-4s. I usually use them for searuns, butt......once in while a steelie will snap me off! Boy that makes me mad!! colors to suit situation: bright to dark: great action, great sparkle, great fly! I certainly agree that muddlers are great killer too! And of course, large black stonefly nymphs!!

My favorite Summer run fly is anything that has some black and purple in it. One I have done the best with is a black body, purple hackle, red wing and tail. This is a variation of a fly that I got from the Guide that used to have the tackle shop in Kalama. I cant remeber his name right now. Big guy. Rick Johnson I think? Lived up on the river also.

Deschutes or Umpqua,
Skaters or nothing. The biggest thrill in steelheading is a dry.Not subsurface. On top.
Yeah, I could probably catch more under the surfaface, but who cares? If I wanto catch numbers then I run spinning gear.
See you on the rivers.
Mark.

For a classic summer pattern, I like to fish a Siver Hilton. Ya just gotta love those hackle wings fluttering in the water.
I usually tie on an After Dinner Mint. It was developed by Mark Noble of the Greased Line in Vancouver. It can be fished just about anyway you want to, but it creates a great "V" wake if fished dry. This fly is a killer pattern on the Lewis and the Kalama.

I ran across a catolog for the Greased Line the other day while sorting through old fly stuff. Back when he started with Bill Mc, on Andersen near K-Mart. 1977, sorta yellowed copy now. Fished a pool on the Kalama one day with Mark, two SH about 6 ft. deep in gin clear water, I stood as the October Caddis skated above them, one of the pair screamed to the surface to tackle that skating bug. I remember that nice fish went to CA with him several days later. Prettiest take I have ever seen.

Floating line steelhead, especially the Deschutes, Freight Train. Anything with some purple and a little white or flash.
I tie a goofy version of it on a #6 or#4 Umpqua hook, spey style with all the hackle tied on the front of the hook with crystal flash subbed for white calf, sometimes I throw a dash of pink marabou on the overwing for kicks. It don't mater much, just get it in front of em'. I stuck a 1/0 siwash on my tippet with a piece of purple chenille tied above just to prove a point to another fella in my run and did very well, it ain't the fly for the most part, just location and presentation.
cheers!
Those articulated leeches are deadly. I personally like a Signal Light followed by a Mack's Canyon. Been a killer for me and the spey rod the last couple years. I like those leeches though. Maybe I will use more of them this year. Gizmo Man, let's plan a spey trip this August for the D. You probably have a few things I can learn, O' Wise one.
