So I got out on a coastal river yesterday and although it was very low and fairly chilly, I MANAGED TO HOOK UP! :excited:
The fish was in great shape and I greatly anticipate eating some of it tomorrow night.
Other notes: It was my first steelhead on a fly that I had tied myself (if you consider a caballero egg a fly) and it was my first steelhead out of my pontoon!
Another memorable steelhead!

It was about 6-7 lbs. and did taste delicious.
I marinated it in soy then on the grill with some wood chips on the burners for smoke. A little brown sugar and lemon pepper right at the end.
Yum Yum!
Strange thing about that my experiences fishing that fly:
Although that was my first fish on a fly I had tied, I have caught a few steelhead (~10) on that fly from the flyshop and all the fish have alway been between 5-7 lbs. Interesting. I dont think it has to do with the fly but I sure would like to hook up with something larger.

You might be fishing a little shallower, softer water than where the bigger fish hold. Just a thought. Many of my bigger steelhead (mostly gear) have come from a little deeper water with a little more current.
Nice fish!

I went back and did the same float on saturday and had no luck. This was frustrating as the water looked much better than the last time i fished it. ( although it was low and rising fast, it was that perfect steel green color)
I fished a hard 5 hrs. and nothing. Ohh well. I wanted to catch another winter fish but now, due to a tight schedule and the run ending soon, I might have to wait for the summers.
