I want to get a fly tying pattern book for trout and steelhead flies. What books do you recommend? I am a novice tyer, but have learned a few of the basics patterns.

I'll tell you the "basic" books that I have that started me out:

Kaufmann's Nymph and Dry Fly Manuals and
Western Hatches

For sttelhead you might look at Kent Helvie's Steelhead Fly Tying book. Fortunately steelhead flies are a bit easier to handle than itty-bitty trout flies.

A few good recipe manuals are The Best 1000 Flies by Stelzer (sp?), Fly Patterns of Umpqua Feather Merchants and Bachmann's Frontier Flies. I know that Schollmeyer also has a good book out but I haven't purchased it yet.

Hope this helps!

I know that there are a lot of books out there and that people will have varying opinions but

It kind of depends whether you simply want a recipe book of patterns, or do you need a 'techniques' type book that shows not only the patterns but step-by-step instructions on how to tie them?
