I usually fish the coastal lakes this time of year and in a month or 2 there will be a blizzard hatch of mayflies which I cant figure out. the bug has sort of an overall purplish cast with cellephane wings and 2 extra long tails. they bob and weave up and down over the lake surface and manys the time Ive seen 4-5 all clutched together flying over the lake. Im pretty sure theyre smilin'! what is this thing? And how would you match it? Anyone else notice this hatch? Usually about April/May. graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Sounds like Callibaetis to me. probably size 12 or 14. Many patterns to choose from. I like the Compardun style tie for stillwaters. Hope this helps.

The bobbbing motion and clear wing are the clues that these are the returning 'spinners' - the mating swarm. Likely Callibaetis. A flush floating spinner pattern, that imitates the spent mayflies, is the ticket.
