I've been tying stimulators and salmon flies for Deshutes. And would love to see any alternatives to those two flies. Mine never quite look like the store ones. I hope fish aren't to picky. Re: legs or no legs, orange or red bodies, etc. Any advice or opinions?!?!?!

I would definitly try the Clark's stonefly. I don't have any pictures of it, but it is a great pattern that sits low on the water, and fishes well.

The ones I tie are ugly, but the fish will bite 'em. Orange yarn body extending past the hook bend, some black hackle for legs and a big wad of deer hair for wings. There's a lot of wing on that bug.

Golden stones can be good too, when your timing is off - as mine generally is. (Can't wait!)

Tie up some fluttering stones All they are is a piece of macrame yarn tied extended beyond the hook point and several brown hackles tied on the front 1/3 of the hook.. good luck

A tying tip for Clarks Stone is to flatten that front hackle so the fly sits flat (front to back) on the water (unless you want a fluttering design).

Don't cut off that bottom hackle! Keep all the fibers and maintain floatation by flattening the hackle and then use thick cement to glue it in place.

It's really a killer pattern.

I had a guide that ordered the Norm Wood's Special by the hundreds. He said that this was the fly that got his clients into fish.

Check out the Frontier Flies book by Bachmann.
