Just started fishing the siletz. Done well on bait, though never tried for cutthroat on the siletz with a fly rod. Herd of a couple of guides that run two fly fishing trips a year just for cutthroat on the siletz.
What patterns are effective? Any tips?

Spruce fly, and any shrimp patterns in Tide water. Nice big Elk hair caddis higher up river.

Can't beat fresh cuts for a nice fight.

You don't have to fish just the big rivers for cuts on the coast. Most people don't know it, but almost any, I mean any small stream that goes across a beach can produce cuts. Don't forget - please catch and release these precious fish.

The strangest thing is: I have never caught a searun on a spruce fly! But always catch them on a RC or Orange/White Shrimp fly.(large)#6!
Good Luck
Catch and Release is generally the rule here...eh?

I used to anxiously await the sea-runs in the fall on Scappoose and Milton creeks Near St. Helens. Unfortuatly these streams rarely produce harvest trout anymore, and they are closed to trout fishing when they are in.

Alot of those guys got a sore set of lips from my spruce flys, And little renegades back in the day.

The Nehalem also has a good run of them, or at least it had, I haven't fished them in years there.

The cutthroat I was catching were rather large. Most 15-18 inches. I guess towards the end of this month and into next, you get cuts up to 3lbs. Anxious to try some new tactics. What are some good shrimp patterns? Any other good ones for cuts ? I am fishing higher up on the siletz, outside of saltwater. Anything you can tell me would help. Thanks again.

By the way, any of you fishing for trout on any North Coast streams, rivers or tidewaters are doing it illegally outside of trout season. So far, I only know of the Alsea in May as being a fishable water for cutts outside of this season. No matter what the shops on the coast say, read the regs and check you local ODFW, they'll say different. Sometimes they're all ignorant and will actually pass right by a flyfisherman going for cutts because they are so focused on salmon and steelhead. Personally, I'm not in favor of it, but those are the rules and they save salmon and steelhead fry.

Back to cutts. Find water connected to the ocean and throw a dry something flashy in the fast water right where it turns from white water to clear. Boom. Fishin'! Upper Siletz is beautiful place. Check lumber folks before going. Sorry I can't give you more, I'm saving it for a book when I'm 50. Have fun.

Oh, shrimp patterns. Don't use them high up. They're a tidewater thing. Me, I shop the streamer patterns and even a smaller bonefish thing that may look like a NW shrimp. The key to cutt fishing is that they will eat a cow femur if you threw it at 'em. As most steelhead and salmon fisherman know, cutts will attack a huge plug intended for everything but them. That gives you an idea of how picky a fly you need to choose. Strip streamers or plop flies. It all works. You just have to find the water and the run.

Once or twice I will run a guide trip for searuns cutthroats on the Siletz in the fall. The section I prefer to fish (water level permitting) is between Twin Bridges and Morgan Park. As for flies, I like the bright streamer flies patterns like a coachman streamer or a Borden Special. Be sure to add some krystal flash to your wing and tail.

Thanks spooner. Although we all know some of the best fishing for cutts is outside of the season I appreciate the honesty. I tend to catch large steelhead/salmon fry on flies during the season as well. Hey, we send them back though. I wish they would open up the season for us folks who are out for the fun of catch and release.
