I may be picking up my first spey rod in a couple of weeks. Any of you guru's in the portland area that can give me an intro to spey casting lesson? Money is tight so I can't afford to get a pro to teach me. I can trade some flies, barley pop and buy lunch. I've been told to get a video but I need hands on instruction. Please help :flowered:

A word of caution; I have been fishing for steelies for about 15 yrs with a flyrod. Bought my first spey rod in the fall of '07. being a self starter, and stubborn, i bought a few videos, and proceded through trial and error. I was doing ok, but inconsistent. I started fishing with a (now good friend) of mine, who is a guide and has been fishing two handed rods since the mid 80's, and he was able to quickly identify my casting flaws and show me the right way to correct my mistakes. Learning with a buddy is great, and I try to help out as much as possible, but there are things that experts can add, that the rest of us would miss. And when you learn to do things correctly, fishing a two hander is tons of fun.

Thanks Zugbug. Eventually I will take lessons. I want to have some hands on experience first. That way I would get more out of the class.

I am not a guru by any means but I know the theory and I can efficiently fish most rivers around here. I recommend you get professional help:D but if all else fails, I can help you get started (better than trying to figure it out on your own). Lots of good casters around here though so I'm sure someone will help you out. And I recommend watching the videos anyway because the more you know before you get to the river, the easier/quicker you will learn.
Good Luck

i think the rio videos are the best. Most fly shops carry them and there are 2 on the series. Also that dec hogan dvd is pretty good too.
good luck,

I haven't seen Dec's but I like the Rio and john Hazel's. Rio's is better but Hazel cleared up some questions I had by explaining thigs a little differently.

Yea, it was kinda the same for me, the Rio Vid was way more in depth, but Dec is entertaining, and he shows practical applications of fishing the two handed rod, not just casting. But I had to get the Rio Vids to learn the Perry Poke.
