A friend and I fished the upper Kalama today and both tagged our first winter steelhead on a fly.

Amazingly, both had a green spagetti tag with "Please Release" in fine print. We were above the hatchery, so given the odds of two fish two tags are these tags a public or private affair.

Thanks in advance.

Did you keep the fish? I believe it is against the law to keep any fish above the hatchery; native or hatchery.

In that the area is selective gear, we obeyed the tag and we 'please released'.

Bap,

Were you swinging or Nymphing.

I have caught steelhead nymphing but never on the swing. So I guess I was just curious. and I havent been out in a while and am going a little crazy!

Anyhow, Congratulations!

We were both swinging. Both came to relatively small (2) flies whose colors were predominantly purple and lipstick pink. The water is crystal clear, a little high, but wadeable and very cold.

Anything above the upper hatchery is catch and release. The area above summers ck is fly only and catch and release.

Landed a good sized tagged, hatchery fish this summer and released it. Great water, but not alot of acess up there. well, unless you have 275k to spend on a lot, (lot only, no house) up by the holy water.
