You could take a look at Grigg rods. They are locally made, guaranteed for life, moderately priced, and cast fairly well. Sportsman's Warehouse carries them. As far as reels go, Okuma makes some decent, moderately priced reels as well.

Good luck.

Check out Albright rods. They have been having some great sales lately. They have some good mid price range outfits.

My next sugestion would be Bi Mart. They carry a Lamniglass fly rod that is a no frills but well made for $70.00. You can catch them on sale for $50.00.

If you are going for trout I would suggest a 9 foot, 4 or 5 weight. If you are looking for steelhead you need to be a bit bigger.

You should also check out River City Fly Shop.

http://www.rivercityfly.com/.

River City is a pretty well stocked shop. You can spend as much or as little as you want in there and the advice is free, plentifull and accurate.

Have fun,

Jim

My first trout fly rod was a Fenwick. I haven't ever spent much on a fly rod. 75.00 Is the most I have spent and I still have the rod 5 years later. It is a 9 ft 5-6 wt, made by redington. It has a medium or moderate action. I have used it for trout and bass. Caught a big bull trout on the metolius with it about a year ago. So I am confident I could get away with catching steelies with it. But typically would rather use an 8wt for the extra backbone and turning over the larger flies. I do have an okuma reel on it that I paid maybe 55 bucks for it. But if you are just starting out I might look at some of the packaged fly rod deals they may have like at sportsmans or cabelas. I know that sportsmans used to have a package by Okuma for around 80 bucks and that was for everything, rod, reel and fly line. Shoot may as well get that set up and while you are there pick up a dozen flies for a dozen bucks and some leader material and a couple tapered leaders and your set...oh yeah and some strike indicators. PM me if you need any questions answered. Where are you located at BTW?
