Everything worked out today. I've landed summer fish for the last few years, but I was not prepared for the fight a 12 to 14lb. winter fish (nate) could put up.
I was dead drifting an egg pattern w/two BB's off of 12lb. mono. if I would have used my usual 8-10lb. leader I would have broke this fish off...
The fight started like any usual indi/egg setup. After the take down, it was across Lake Creek to the other side in 30 seconds. I was not prepared for the fish to try and hang me up on every semi submerged clump of grass and bush in the river. The first run across went pretty smooth, just let it run, but then when I felt the wieght of the fish (biggest summer fish 6lbs.) it was up in the air if I was going to get it under control, it just hammered me. With monster head turns, and it's ability to do what ever it wanted for the first 5 minutes, I was at his mercy. My God, this fish owned me throughout the fight.
I only had 30 ft. of good footing on the small island to work with, with a nice sized tree at the base, after that, it was all boulders and clumps on exposed grass/trees placed most likely by this freakin' fish. I was able to get the fish finally in the inside channel of the island, when two nice guys pulled up to give me some support (Support????) Heck was beat, the butt section buried in my chest, pulling on the fish which was directly below me in the current. The two guys were able to give me advice on where to step so I could make it to the bank. After my arms were rubber, one of the guys said, "We have a net in the truck." :flowered::flowered:
Well, I was able to run the fish up on a nice sandy beach, then we all realized it was a native buck. Then with a nice gentle embrace, "hero shot" (No camera) I realeased this guy, back into the water, I said, "go make some more babies."
With that, I offered a hand to both guys who pulled up to watch and help.
The fish is now swimming between Indio and Deadwood with a eggo pattern in it's lip, saying to itself, "That guy was lucky he landed me. I rule this river!!!"
Go get'em folks.
