I fished the Crooked yesterday. What a beautiful day to be on the river. The fishing was dead slow for me until about 1 pm. Then I started taking fish on an orange scud. Later in the day a variety of chironomid pupae started taking fish. About every 4th fish was a trout. I caught more trout than I have in past years fishing in the winter. I also lost several nice trout and landed one very nice one that was close to 17".

FallRiverGuy,
I went over after work yesterday and did not have the same luck. I suppose the water was very low when you went? I only fished about an hour but it seamed pretty dead. the sun was off the water for the most part and the temp was dropping fast. Did you catch most of your fish during the heat of the day? 1-3?
Any info would help. I'm having a hard time hooking up with any winter trout. I have also tried the D above town for brown and had no luck (only two one hour trips though)
Thanks.

What size of scud are you using?

That's you're number one problem right there.
Moreso with winter fishing, you need t be really patient, because if you're expecting the same numbers of fish as you would get in the spring or fall, you'll be mistaken. That said, I think that winter fishing the THE most relaxing (for me). as far as the fishing is concerned, nymph...a lot. always keep your eyes open for BWO hatches around midday & midge hatches...the nice thing is that you usually have most of the river to yourself.

I went back over yesterday and had a slow day. I landed three and missed 4 or 5.
The scud was size 14. The other weekend I did not get a fish until 1 pm and I fished until 4. Yesterday I started at 1 and fished until 5. They were definitely keyed into something else yesterday.

Are the whitefish spawning or have they already? I was over on the crooked back around the first part of december and caught a few and my buddy caught maybe 6 or 7. I was catching them on an egg pattern and he was catching on a tandem egg and midge I believe. I caught 1 trout and he caught 3 I think. I remember maybe 4 years ago when the whitefish would spawn you could go and catch dozens of fish in a day. I have seen trout stacked up behind spawing whitefish there and you could wade in ankle deep water and toss flies downstream and just knock them dead. Like shooting fish in a barrel. Just wondering if the fishing was still good when they spawn? And if they haven't spawned yet then maybe it would be worth it to make another trip there soon!

What color egg patterns for fishing the whitefish spawn?

The white fish spawn in November and early December. Their eggs look pale yellow to me. The white fish I caught the past two weekends were all done spawning.

yeah they are a pale yellowish color. I have caught them on orange patterns an white ones too. I like to use glue eggs. I bought a glue gun to make my own. Go down around the Palisades campground and fish the deep holes with a small split shot with an egg pattern below. Kinda just do a drift down through where the water is moving. There are some pretty good size whities that I have caught doing that. I have used big egg patterns and small ones. They both work well.

The spawining of Whitefish is over, however I continue to take fish on egg patters, I think you can take fish on eggs all year. I use the soft eggs from Cabela's, 4mm.
