So I fish the Sandy and the Clack a lot with a few trips to the Big D. Im wanting to get into a two handed spey rod for steel head and silvers, So does this sound like what I need?

Echo7130-4X Tim’s Power Rating: 7.1The ECHO 13'0" #7/8 fly rod was designed as a light all round rod for medium to larger rivers that don't require casts much over 100 feet. It is a medium stiff medium action rod. It is designed for Steelhead and Atlantic salmon using any of the family of "Spey" casts. It can also be used with a sink tip or a Skagit head or Skagit line to get a fly down to the fish. The rod can handle a wide range of lines but feels good with a "standard" Delta Spey or Windcutter type line that has a head length of about 52 feet and a head weight of about 530 grains. If a Skagit type head is used the rod should be loaded with about 70 grains more than you would use with a "standard" floating line. Linesize: 7/8 Height: 13’0"Handle: 6MSRP: $269.95

I've never cast the Echo rods but do know other anglers who use and enjoy them. They seem to be well-made rods. This model sounds like it would be a good bet. The only way to know for sure is to cast one and see if you like it.

There are many good rods out there from several reputable manufacturers, but they all feel just a bit different. The real key is matching the stick with the correct line for YOU. The line the rod maker recommends and what you like may be very different, so go cast a few and have fun!

The recommended grain weight says this rod would be a good all-around stick. 600 grain Skagit’s will launch winter fly’s fine. Scandinavian shooting heads in 7/8 would round out the package nicely and work well for summer fish. You dont need extra spools with this system. One reel with a good running line will work for both lines.

I fished that rod until I let a jerk guide friend talked me into a trade. Lets just say I miss that rod a lot. It works well with a 540 Airflo Skagit, Compact NW 7/8 Skagit Line and 7wt Delta. If you casted this stick next to a 7133 Winston B2x, you will find them very similar.

Really?

When you get your hands on one I'd like to try it out.

I have that rod and fish the same general area you do, so if you ever want to try it out, let me know. I fish it with a 7/8 delta long and also have the 540gr compact skagit. Both lines will load it deep into the butt section.

P.S. I think I agree with SSPey... The 540 compact skagit is a little too heavy for my liking so I'd go down to around 500.

We'll I don'y know anything about this rod but if it is very similiar to the 7133 winston the 510 is the right load for a compact.

The Echo skagit recommendations include the tips weight. There is some personal preference involved. I run a 510gr compact on my classic 8136 and have no problem throwing 12' of t-14 and some big uglies.

I tried the BIIx last year, but didn't really get a good feel for it(casting pond test:passout:) so I can't tell if they are that similar....

You guys wanna get together one of these weekends (or when it warms up a little bit) on the Sandy.... bring all the gear we have and test out different outfits:D Kinda like a mini spey clave minus the huge crowds...

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the post:flowered:

I was referring to the moderate action of both rods.

I also own that rod. i throw a 540 c/s with 10' of cct200 as a tip. I thought about trying a 510, but i like the way it feels and casts with
the 540. For summer/fall i like the 460 afs head. that rod is really a 7wt. I fished it all winter last year and feel it would be a good "lone" spey rod for the rivers you fish.
