I would begin by joining the Albany Chapter of NW Steelheaders which meets at Senior Center 1st Wed of each month at 7:00. Only $10 per year and some great guys and gals to trade info with. Also good seminars as well on steelheading this time of year.

If you can catch trout in a river then you can catch steelhead. Apply your trout knowledge to steelheading. Steelhead will hold in the same places trout will ( Behind boulders, current seams, tailouts, ect.). Use the same methods for steelhead as you would for trout, drifting bait, casting spinners, bobber & jigs, ect. .
I like to drift bait, I use a #1 hook, 8lb. leader & 10 to 12 lb. main line. I use about 18 to 24 inches of leader tied to a barrel swilve. I use hollow core pincel lead & crimp it to the tag end of the knot tied to my swilve. I use VERY little lead, if I tap bottom once out of 7 or 8 cast my lead is just right. You want your bait to slide through the drift as natural as possible.
I hope this helps you out, Dave.

Search old posts on the subject on iFish.net, read books (Amato is a good place to start), buy videos, search the Internet, youtube videos, go to seminars put on at your local fishing suppliers and speak to their fishing sales people (Joes, Sportsmans Warehouse, etc.), then go out and put it all to practice. When in doubt re: what you're doing, post a question.
Find a style you think you like (drifting, float fishing, fly fishing) and give it a chance, but remain flexible, as differnet techniques/methods work at different times).
Best wishes, and patience.
