Just a heads up from the Crescent Ranger District office. They are planning on locking the gate for the season this Friday the 5th.
They generally lock it Dec 1st. I'm planning on 1 last day there Friday. This means access to all public launches will be locked for the winter. You may or may not be able to launch at the resort. Their sand beach sucks unless you have a very small, light boat and ain't bashful about getting your feet wet.

Thanks for the info. Too bad they won't wait until the snow piles up a little to close it. I'm good with the dirt launch but it obviously won't work for everybody.

If Crescent Lake Resort allows us all to use their beach this winter please pay the launch fee. They had problems with no payment in the past and may stop allowing us to use their beach. It is our only opportunity to get out on the lake.
Thanks,
Jimmy

That sucks. As long as it isn't buried in snow, they should lock up the the campground, toilets, whatever, but leave the ramp accessible.

They have the gate to the campground locked already, but the main gate by the main road blocks all traffic to the ramp as well. I guess they figure if there was funding to put in an un needed gate, they will find funding to send some one to lock the un needed gate.:berry:

This makes little to no sense, but then again look who we are dealing with........:D
Sure hope the resort keeps our options open.
Come to think of it, I really need to get back up there! :yay:

I was up there today. The launch by the campground is open and will be until mid week. Snow comes thursday. I talked to the resort owners and they said that they are allowing people to launch from the beach. They ask, 4 wheeldrive only and to not park on the beach. They also said if your boat is 21ft'ish or so, with a not to sharp of Vee you can launch there no problem.
Now, as far as fishing report. I have nothing. Zero. zilch. I did see a few big browns cruising, but no takers. This is a fishery i would like to get better at. So any tips would be good. Also, if anyone may have an open seat maybe keep me in mind.
We fished bomber long A's in clear/chrome/blue, Rapalas in black, blue and rainbow, Brocken back and original. We also tried some smaller zip fish in a mess of colors. Long lined about 100-150 behind the boat. nothing.

If you're targeting Browns then I would at least double that. 250-300 minimum :twocents:

Crescent is an extremely clear lake. For wary browns, 250 to 300 feet of line for long-lining. Sounds ridiculous, I know, but I think you may see your bite ratio go up if you do this. Sounds like you're using the right lures. This type of fishing is not for the faint of heart, that's for sure. You have to put your time in, but, after a while, you'll get it. Look at Klamanite, he's having himself a banner year, but he busted his tail the last couple years. Everything finally came all together, and in a "Big" way (pun intended).

I want to second Jimmy's notion to PAY THE RESORT FOR LAUNCHING! This fishery is a winter time jewel, and Tom and Lori (owners of the resort)are nice people who have been burned bigtime by disrepectful fishermen who take advantage of their private beach launching option. I give them $20 every time I launch in the winter and thank them profusely for the opprotunity to fish. It kills me that the lake is open year round, but there is no means for the general public to use the lake without accessing private resort property. The sad thing is that if there is too much complaining about it they start threatening to close the lake for the season along with the other lakes. NOOOOO! The resort owners used to put a lot of effort into plwing the beach so that we could launch all year, but abuse led them to stop doing it. With the high water level this year it makes it much easier to slide a smallish boat up and down the beach. it is so cool to be the only boat out on that big lake in the middle of winter with little icebergs floating around.:excited:
As far as "long lining" goes. It depends on conditions. If there is a good chop on the water or rain/snow fall offering cover, you can get away with a "short" long line of 250-300 ft. If the water is flat with blue bird skies, I run 400 ft or more. The trophy trout fishermen on Tahoe typically run 600 ft behind the boat. It becomes essential to run a braided mainline (I prefer Power Pro, hands down) with a 50 ft (or so) leader (I like 15 lb for the shallows of Crescent).

Hookjaw,
What size Power Pro are you running? Is it necessary to go up to #30? Or can we get by with smaller #20?

I run 15 lb Power Pro. Many guys in this game run 30 lb, but I know that my 15 lb leader will fail long before the 15 lb P Pro. That stuff is incredibly strong, and it is only vulnerable when there is no leader (bungee) in the system. I have seen it break easily when running straight to the lure because there is a zero stretch factor. I like the smaller test because the smaller diameter, the less drag, and the more depth you will get out of a given lure. I will even run 20 lb leader with my 15 lb P Pro without any worries. The other big advantage of the smaller test is quantity of line on the spool. The more the better. :twocents:

Dan,
Thanks for the tips on line. Just curious what type of leader you like. Are you using flurocarbon? I've found it to be a little "brittle" but have liked it for Kokanee's because it is a little stiffer and doesn't tangle much. Plus, that stuff is invisible! Probably can't go wrong with good ol Ultra Green Maxima though.

I like the Pline Fluoroclear. It has a fluorocarbon coating but still has decent flexibility. It's cheap too... like me.
I got a call this evening from my buddy Jordan. He fished Crescent today with another guy and THE GATE IS STILL OPEN. They spent most of the day in the shallows hoping for a big brown. Lost one good one on a long line and lost a mac of 11-12 lbs at the boat. Spent an hour onthe downriggers (set at 120 ft) and picked up macs of 10 and 17 lbs. Not a bad day for a couple of young punks:wink:

That's exactly what I use. I use a 12 leader. However, I've been sawed off a bit as well. But I also know guys that have been sawed off using 20 lb test..... ahem.... hookjaw...... ahem....Jimmy.....
There are some beasts in these waters.
