Well with the lack of snow it looks like some bonus weeks of fishing are available at Crescent this fall. I thought I was done, but maybe a couple more trips can get squeezed in yet. I took 2 friends out this morning for macks. Got to the launch at 8:00. 3rd boat on the water. 22 degrees and a flat lake. 5 minutes in I got a bump, then Wayne reeled in a decent mack.

Then my rod went off and I reeled in another nice mack on a jointed kwickie. With the fish in the net, I grabbed the top of the kwickie while the fish twirled the bottom half and got me back with the trailing hook.

It looked worse then it felt. I hope the mods don't pull this thread for excessive blood.:D

I felt like kind of an idiot. We could not pull it back out with the pliers, so 30 minutes into our day we were back at the ramp and on our way back to urgent care in Bend. Barbs on hooks certainly do what they were designed to do. Its amazing that a fish can spit a hook sometimes. The fish swam off with less scars than he gave me. I once took a 3 day raft trip down the lower Deschutes and this happened to one of our group. We had nothing to cut the hook or the finger, so he kept it in his finger for 3 days. We called him "Captain Hook" the whole trip.
I just know that this was going to be a 20 fish day with at least 1 over 20 lbs. But it was not meant to be.

Joe,

Man that just looks bad. :bigshock: I hope you saved your hook. :D

Maybe with no snow I will see you next weekend on the water.

Thanks for the report and pictures (of the fish). That looked pretty nasty, glad everything worked out ok.

Holy smoke son. Hopefully at 22 degrees your fingers were frozen enough so you didn't suffer much pain. Maybe some day (after you recover from frostbite) you could host a fishing clinic demonstrating to us 'novices' the proper way to set a hook :D. Seriously, glad you're okay and nice job on the macs!

Ooof! I have been looking at youtube videos on fish hook removals..They have it down pretty slick but that one might be tough with the "push down and pop it out method"....

The doc ended up pushing it through, snipping off the point just above the barb and backing it out. ( after a shot of anisthetic) Now that I know the method, I could do it myself next time. It couldn't feel worse than trying to pull it out backwards with a rusty needle nose, which was my only method while on the boat.

Man Joe, that looks like it hurts. At least you got some action before needing to leave.

Joe,

I'll know to let you do the releasing when we get together.

Nice fish and glad your finger is okay.

If you got the balls you can always poke it all the way through and pinch the barb down then bring er on back through. :flowered:
I've done it.
It hurts.
But it's better then a hospital bill.

If you are going to go that route I would cut the hook below the barb...at least you woulnt have the barb "bump" going back through..

Joe,

That hurts just looking at the photo! My family and I were fishing at Paulina Lake a few years ago and my son got a treble hook from a Nordic jig buried in the plam of his hand. Just like you, he ended up at urgent care in Bend.

That looks exactly like my pinky-finger earlier this spring on Klamath Lake. I soaked my hand in the frigid water for about 10 minutes to somewhat numb it then gave it a good yank.............. Didn't work

I ended up just pulling really hard until it popped out. Either that or I had to quit fishing and I wasn't ready to go in yet.

Looks like you made the most of your limited time on the water though, nice fish :applause:
