I was thinking of putting a washdown system in my 19ft. SuperVee open sled. What kind would you install and any ideas on how to and where to place it would be helpful. Are there any sites I could check out to show how they are mounted and installed? Thanks.

To start you will need a thru hull and ball valve, there are a lot of different pumps, comes down to space.being an alum.boat I would use a maralon thru-hull&valve 1/2" would be good enough for most pumps. What kind of access do you have to either the bottom or transom?Transom will work if used while not on plane.pump mounting ***.are pretty open as they really don't care vert.or hori. then you can use a flush mnt. quick connect for the hose.remember no silicone for thru hull, polysulphide or polyurethane only.Hope it helps.

On the electrical side, be sure to provide an ample (pun intended) supply of juice.

I've replaced several pumps because the motors have burned out due to insufficient wiring. These things typically draw 8 amps, with a 10-amp fuse. You need to consider the entire length of total wire from the battery positive, through the fuse, to the switch, back to the pump and from the pump negative to the battery negative. You'll be suprised how long that total run is and how big of wire is required by the instalation instructions to deliver at least 80% of the voltage at 8 amps.

The other method that has worked well for me, especially on larger boats, is to install a relay in the circuit - much like the headlight circuit of a car.

The relay can be positioned close to the pump with a relatively short 10-12AWG wire from battery/fuse to the pump motor, with another short ground wire from pump to battery.

The longer run from the relay coil to the on-off switch can be 18AWG as this only pulls less than an amp to control the relay. Don't forget to use a marine grade relay that is sealed and spark protected especially if the thing sits in the bilge where there could be gas fumes.

Check out my gallery, there are several pictures of how it is installed. Stevens did the install when the boat was new so I can't take credit but it may give you some ideas.

The salt water will eat them up :twocents: First the paint will come off then either the switch will corrode up or the diaphram will.

I put the 4th pump on my ocean boat in 4 years a few months ago. The first two were Johnsons, they didnt hold up well. The 3rd was an shurflow and so was the 4th :hoboy:

My advise is to go to West Marine and buy the best pump they have, at least 5 gpm. Then pay for the 2 year no ask replacement policy for like $30 on the pump. If your using it in the salt it wont last that long and if it does, get a new one anyway before it expires :twocents:

Hi Shaker-King. I just joined this site. I googled How to set up a wash-down system and this site showed up. Exactly what I was looking for but I need more info. I ordered one from Cabelas and it is due to get here soon. I saw you said to check your gallery, and I don't know how to get to it or even if it is availible for me to check out. I have a 19' Jetcraft aluminum boat and I think it will be easy to install it in the transom. Thanks for any help, or ideas

When my sled had one, it was at the back drivers side gunnel. That puts it close to your pump. I'd say wash downs are good wherever you may be cleaning fish or need a hose:D. Wish I still had one.
