I know I read somewhere my 97 Merc 4 stroke has charging ability from the factory. I've been googling for a while now and can't find anything about it. Anyone know what I need to do?

I went through the same search process with zero results as well. I have an 8 HP 4 stroke Merc on my boat. I (reluctantly) went to the dealer and ended up buying the kit for my motor. It's called a rectifier, that's why I couldn't find it online. It was about $120 or $130, don't remember exactly. I put it on myself in less than an hour. The only trick is getting the flywheel off without having to buy the puller. With a little tapping and some gentle prying, it should come right off. if it doesn't want to go, see if the dealer will lend/rent you his puller for an hour or so.

Good Luck :D

I have a 2002 Bigfoot and it came from the factory with charging capabilities. But I had to buy (for $30.00 I think) the wiring hardess doo dad to go to the battery. Don't know if you have the same set up or not, but I hope this helps.

I would suggest taking it or at least the model and serial number to the dealer and they should be able to help.

Also, when I hooked up the charging capibilities, I started catching a lot more fish. :bigshock:

Good luck

All the necessary hardware, harnesses etc. were included in the rectifier kit.

You need to find out if it was set up from the mfg with the charging capabilities, if so all you need is the harness, if not then you have to buy the rectifier kit, the wireing should already be there if set up from the factory,

Any hints of what to look for to see if it was set up for charging at the factory? I'd sure like to be able to charge off mine.

Pop the cover off and look into the inner diameter of your flywheel. If the rectifiers are there you should see 2 copper coils offset from each other. Mine had the mounting lugs but no coils which is why I needed the entire kit.

Thanks! I'll take a look in a few weeks during my annual boat maintenance weekend.
