I have my eyes on a couple of level wind type.I plan on buying myself an early christmas present and am curious as to what the census of the posters is here?
What do you look for in reel for fishing primarily for trolling for kokanee?
Gear ratio?
Line Counter?

As for the line do you use a certain color?
Wt?
Do you use a leader?
FLoro vs others?

If you use a leader from where?
Before the dodger, after the dodger or sling blade?

Hope this hasnt been covered in to much details before, and not too many questions at one time

Thanx

I use a Daiwa Accudepth line counter model AD17LC. It's gear ratio is 5.1:1. I use Maxima Ultragreen 8lb. test for main line and leader, as koks aren't line shy. I tried out the fluorocarbon for leader, but didn't like the way it coiled up for storage, and seemed to break more. With the koks mouths as soft as they are, stick with monofilament over braid for trolling, and a good limber pole.

I use 8lb PLine CXX in green with a topshoot of 30 ft. of 6lb. PLine fluorocarbon line. I have this on same Daiwa mentioned above and for a left handed reel us an Okuma 20 DLX linecounter. I personally like the Okuma better because of the left hand retrieve, but like the size of the Daiwa better.

Just want to add a bit more to this thread... While vertical jigging near the bottom this year, I noticed that the reading on the line counter reel I mentioned in my previous post above was off compared to the depth reading on the fish finder. I marked out a distance of 50' out in front of the house and let out line to that mark. Found out the reading was off by around 12' with 50' out on the reel. After re-reading the instructions, I'll have to change out to 10' test mono to get the most accuracy for the main line, and will probably stick with 8' mono for the leader. This reel will be used for trolling only in the future, so will be loaded with mono only for it's stretch to help keep the koks on with their soft mouths, and to get the most accurate reading from the line counter. After learning more about jigging here on a previous thread, I think a spinning reel loaded with braid and fluorocarbon leader will be used for jigging in the future. Just gotta work on a good way of measuring line out to get just above the fish...

I use a spinning reel for both trolling and jigging. I load it up with 6# test Ultra Green, on the heaver jig rod, the one I use for 3/4 oz. or heaver jigs, I use 8# test Ultra Green.

I use the pull method for depth, just measure the pull and then do the math! One of my pulls equals 3', so to fish at 30', ten pulls. If the fish are on the bottom, I just open the bail and let the jig sink!
