I was wondering, for those of you who use nightcrawlers, which half do you use the most. I prefer the top half.

I use both...but I have noticed that the darker half does seem to work better.

Seems to me I once read that the lighter half is supposed to attract more fish--but when they're hitting it doesn't matter!

I was fishing with the kids and for some unknown reason I started to keep track while they were catching fish. I definately found the lighter half was better then the darker half. Maybe it was the weather, the light, or who can really tell, but the lighter haft was ahead by 4 to 1.

I got into a place this fall wher the trout were gourging on little crawdads. A one inch piece of the dark end threded on the hook was really off the hook.

I like the dark half, but the other half seems to catch fish for whoever is sharing a seat in the boat.

I have been using Gulp 'Nightcrawler' in the Natural color for about 3 years now and they don't have "light-dark", they are all same color. I do very well cutting about 1 1/4 inch pieces attched to lure of just on plain bait holder hooks. When I use 'live' nightcrawler, I use my worm threader and put it all on the hook and run it up the leader and expose the hook tip at about 1/2 inch or less from tail.

i use the head first the darker half.. i've found that you can catch more fish with it.. it stays on the hook longer. i usually thread the hook past the worms hearts that's the band between the dark part and the lighter part. and then i leave a small tail. Me and a buddy use to have a completion on who could catch more fish me using the dark end and my buddy using the tail end. I'd like to say i won ever time but it seemed like i'd do well one day and then he'd do well on other days. Go figure i think a fish will bite whatever is in front of their face

grandpa always said you werent fishing if you didn't have the 'band' on the hook. It worked for him, but I admit, I don't always follow his advice. Unless it is really slow and i start wondering if the little things make a difference. Then I reel in, and do what grandpa said, like I should have been doing all along. Theres hope yet.

Keep the head I like the tail on a number 8 hook so when you move it through the water it wiggles beats the head 9out of 10 times.:D

I like the darker half personally. It has better texture to it, and tastes better than the back half. Don't get me wrong, I don't waste the back half, I just don't eat them raw like I do the front end of them. I save them up and make stir fry with 'em.

The head pinched just below the heart. The worm will squirm and survive longer if you leave the brain and hearts connected. I split the worm below the band so the heart continues to pump blood into the water making sent trail to the bait.

I have actually never thought about it! I just take whichever piece I get out of the carton first. I too try to thread them up the line as much as possible, and have determined the dark half is more apt to stay on the hook after hooking and landing a fish. TOC.

I don't think it makes much of a difference trout fishing. I do prefer to use the darker half and slide my hook "out" through the heart for bass. Seems to work better. I have heard the "heart" produces more scent in the water than any other part of the worm.

Interesting post. I always use the lighter half first, until im all out of them, then go to the darker ones. The lighter half is easier for the trout to eat, and I get hook ups easier, and I feel they see it better, not sure, but its just a preference. I seem to get alot more bites on the lighter ones, when I am fishing just the darker halfs, my bites always go down. But thats just my preference.
