Lost my 9 year old german shorthair in August due to an accident and now I'm looking to replace her. We have 3 young girls w/ a 4th on the way so I'm switching gears a bit to more of a family dog, hunting dog second. Anyone know of a good golden retreiver breeder in the area? I'm partial to the longer legged, leaner, darker golden retreiver's.

thanks!

BTW - curious of any good resources out there to find puppies! can't find anything good in the way of a search engine on google. Craigslist doesn't appear to have a pet section which suprised me.

Would love to present the family with the new puppy for Christmas.

Look in the upper left corner of CL under Community, there is a pet heading. That's where I got my dog.

Goldens are great family dogs btw.

Check the website Kijiji. It is like craigslist, but unlike craigslist allows for the 'sale' of pets. We found our Golden on there over the summer and couldn't be happier with him.

Goldens are the best. Our 2 year old girl is one of the best dogs in the history of dogs. I may be a little prejudice, but you cannot got wrong with a Golden!!!

Just had to put my :twocents: in......I lost my RED Golden Retiriever, Maggie, last Fall around this time. She was only 5-1/2 years old and should have lasted a bunch longer, but she got sick fast and got worse real fast. I took her to the vet on the 5th day she was sick. No obvious symptoms other than a fast pant, so they put her on anti-biotics and blood medications, steroids, etc. Next day, she layed down behind ny truck and passed away. WORST DAY OF MY LIFE! Golden's are a special breed. She was loved by all the neighbors, even though I was new here in Nehalem. I "lost" her occasionally, but only because the neighbor kids would invite her into the house to play. The kids parents did the same thing. I had to finally ask them to let me know when they were "dognapping" Maggie, because, being fairly new here, I knew she could wander off and get lost pretty fast. I haven't replaced her yet. Actually...CAN'T!!! She irreplacable and was one of those "One of a Kind" kind of dogs...I've had plenty of dogs, and dang cats too. Every man's dog is he best, but even avid hunters, and tons of people in these parts who live and breed Lab's of various colors, were first to tell me how special Maggie was....

.....My point is, for a "Family Dog" who is energetic, totally LOYAL (to the neighbors too, so be careful!) loving, SMART and absolute fun to be part of the family, you can't go wrong!

Now that I read your post, and saw some of the good ideas on where to look for a Golden, it has peaked my interest, once again...

...BTW...We had Maggie trained out at Minnogie Kennels when she was about 7-8 months old.....They are great people out there...I recommend them highly!!! And, they knew exactly where Maggie was bred when we walked in the door, unannounced! That amazed me! They know their stuff so go in confidence.

Thanks for all your help and insights. After reading some of the PM's and responses I feel like I'm making the right decision on the breed. I'm on the waiting list for a pup from Minnogie Kennels due to be born sometime late spring!

If you are in line for the "Laney" x "Stanley" pups - wow! Great lines. Most of the dark, blocky, hunter lines have common lineage. I am on my third Golden and can't recommend them highly enough - outstanding hunter/family/companions.

Enjoy your new puppy!

NWR.....sorry to hear that your lost your dog. I lost my first golden about 4 years ago and researched them pretty hard before getting another one. There was a breeder in Tigard, maybe someone can chime in, but he bred some really spectacular hunting dogs and dark red like you like. I did a quick search on Google but couldn't find him. If you contacted the Pacific Rim Golden club (http://www.prgrco.org/) they might be able to stear you in his direction. It seems like most of the Golden Breeding is geared more for conformation then hunting. Good luck with the search and all those girls as well!
