Well another sea-run cutt season comes to a close. I hope so very much it doesn't get open for retention next year.
The numbers of fish and size are getting better every year. With the salmon runs down I've been spending more time troutin this past month. On the last day I figured I would go hardcore and hit it all day. I picked my river and thought I would try to break 100 landed in a day. That is an average of 10 an hour all day, so there has to be alot of fish around.
My biggest for the day was 19"+, a few 18's and lots of 14-17's (but mostly 8-11). The finale tally was 103 banked and well over a hundred lost, I use a wheel counter when I'm keeping track. I landed one steelhead and had two others eat my strike indicator:passout:.
Now I have to wait 7 months for next season.

Wow, that sounds like a ton of fun! Would you like to share some good fly patterns! Those fish are awesome and great fighters when they get some size!

My understanding is it is a done deal on leagally retaining 2 per day over 12" on the North coast streams starting in 2009. It was in the Oregonian about a week ago. I have mixed feeling but lean towards no retention.

I like to use wollybuggers, mudlers, spruce and egg patterns when there's weather, dry flys like caddis, stimulators and hoppers when its nice out.

Thanks Mike, gotta add that to my bucket list for next year!:meme:
I had a great time fishing for them earlier in the season in tidewater . Got some really nice ones. Retention is a done deal and it's 8" and over . 2 per day two limits in possesion . I'm kinda sore about the whole deal . Anybody know the process to get changes made to the new regs ? I think it would be better with a slot limit of 10"-13" like on the Deschutes. Leave the big fish in the river to spawn and pass on thier genes.

A true addict never gets tired of catching no matter what species it is. It deffenitly isn't about the numbers, but sometimes I just set a goal and try to get there.

 It seems you just made a great arguement for retention. If you can catch 100 fish in a day it seems it would be hard to argue that the population is not healthy. Important to remember that there is mortality associated with catch and release fishing and if you are catching a 100 fish??????

I think it has more to do with the superior abilities of
Mike. It's not like he didn't work extremely hard for them, and I have a feeling Mike handled all his fish with extreme care. :twocents:

I would guess Mike has a lot of skill...catching that many fish in any situation requires a lot of skill. I also assume from the way he seems aware of the population that Mike is very careful with the fish he handles. Unfortunately not all fisher people are as aware and skillful as it appears Mike is.
I say more power to Mike. I also think the population has done a good job of rebounding and I think a 2 fish retention will have no more impact than catch and release fishing. It is important to remember that the stress of being caught can have a cumlative effect of the fish and things like infectious growths can occur when fish are cut with a hook. With a catch and release impact on the fish they still have rebounded well.

There's nothing special about me except the amount of leg work I put in. When you know when to be where the fish are at what river level, it greatly increases your numbers. But if there was one thing that really helps with SRC's it is to twitch any wet fly you use, it's an offer they cant refuse :D
