I decided one last trip up to Newberry crater was in order on Halloween, the last day of the season up there. I had been PM'ing with Jimmy and he decided he would be up there on Thur for a couple days. Our experience the last few years has not been great for browns on Paulina. However the last 3 state records have come from there. It's kinda a no-brainer if you are looking for just one fish, but a really good one. We got to the launch at 6:45 in pitch darkness to hear and feel the wind howling, so I knew my idea of casting to the shoreline with the electric motor would not be possible. We flat lined, then ran the downriggers till noon and met Jimmy on shore for lunch. We never had so much as a bump and Jimmy had only managed 1 dink. So we debated on the plan for the afternoon. My friend Doug had never caught a brown so I decided after another hour of fruitless trolling that a run up to East was in order. Some of my best brown trips in sheer numbers have been October late afternoon/evenings on East. We launched and got 2 to the boat in 10 minutes including Doug's 1st brown ever.

None of these fish were much over 16" but finishing the season with a bunch of fish in a short period of time is always a positive thing.

Good effort Joe! That kind of persistence will catch the new state record brown one of these days. Looking at those clouds in your photos and the weather reports, I bet it will be snowing at Paulina this weekend. :stormwarning:

Heck Joe...even finishing the season with a small bunch of fish in a long period of time is positive. Glad you guys had a good time despite the nasty weather. With your persistance and fishing knowledge I agree that there very well could be a record fish in the future for you. :thisbig:

Joe,
It was good to see you and Doug up at Paulina. Its one of those trips that I wont forget for a long time. Nothing like being beat up for hours on the water just hoping for that one bite. Maybe I will see you at Crescent next. Congrats on getting Doug his first brown. He is in trouble now :D

fish-on-bend...you are one hard core fisherman! I've seen alot of your posts, and snow, rain, or wind will not keep you away from what you enjoy. That picture of you putting your boat in up at Cultus in the snow was hard to believe! I expect to see you in the paper with your pipe and a record breaking fish one of these days!

Nice report, Joe. Glad somebody is chasing ol' Mr Hookjaw. Good move on heading to East and getting into some numbers. We both know that there is serious big fish potential there, too. I have high hopes for East in the next few years. It kicked out so many browns in the 4-9 lb range this year and they are all healthy, fat, and growing fast. With so many guys putting those fish back, I see numbers of 10+ lb trophy fish coming soon. I know of 8 browns over 9 being caught this year from guys I know, but only one of those was over 10, next year they will all be over the magic mark. :excited:
Hope to see you at Crescent.

Way to go Joe:applause: And way to get your buddy into his first brown ever! :applause: That's an accomplishment in itself! Gotta love Newberry Crater. Amazing fishing in one of the most beautiful settings on God's good earth! Like the Bare Naked Ladies song "If I had a Million Dollars.." I'd buy a cabin/property up there and make it my spring through fall home!!! Actually, now that I think about it, I'd make it my permanent home!
Hope to see you on the water one of these days!!

Way to go Joe! That brown looks like the ones we were catching at Jackson earlier in the summer. Ever since I joined Ifish I haven't had a catch worth posting. We got a inch of snow last night so the water should be starting to turn at Donner. Maybe I can get another one of those big macks. Today is the day. Let's pray.
