Hello all, new to this board, but not to fishing. Most of my life I have fished mainly Bass, Pike, Walleye, Catfish, and any sort of Panfish. I moved here from MidWest about 2 1/2 years ago, been fishing for Sturgeon, Salmon, and Steelies the whole time I've been here. I have been to some nice spots along the John Day, pulled in some 1.5 Smallies, even caught a 2lb Walleye. Recently I acquired a Johnboat, I've been looking at the little Lakes up in Sauvie, and have been wondering the usual, how deep, how weedy, temp, species, most of all is it fishable, all that good stuff. Also the pond next to Multnomah Falls looks like a Farm Pond you would see back in Iowa, where you would pull out 5lb Largemouth, huge Blue gills, and crappies as big as your hand. Primarily I would like to check around my home base in North Portland, the channel, slough, and the Willy. I do realize there is a fishing code, and giving up spots and advice is a hard thing to do. I guess I'm just looking for just a little help.
Thanks for any advice, good luck out there.

Just an FYI about Sauvie Islands, firstly, Sauvie Island is a mixed used area, used by hunters, fisherman, hikers, etc.
However, sturgeon lake is a designated goose refuge, between Oct 1 - April 15, 2009 there is no access to sturgeon lake.
For the other lakes in the public areas, those little bodies of water will also be off limits to fisherman, and all others during the timeframe mentioned.
From Oct 11 - Jan 25, 2009, the little lakes will be open to waterfowl hunting every other day. Check the game bird regulations for the days which are open, if your a waterfowler. To access those areas, you must have a daily access permit from the check stations.
The only area which will possibly be open to fishing during the winter is the multnomah slough, banks of the columbia, and the gilbert river.

Welcome to IFish. I too am transplanted. My advise is to develop relationships with people that fish around Portland via this site and ask different ones to take you fishing. There are tons of very helpful people here that are willing to show you the ropes around here. Use the PM's and the search button at the top to gain tons of info. I have found that the fishing here is as good as in the south, or the mid-west, if you take the time to learn from others here. Bill

My Advice.......call Karen out at the Sauvie Island WMA Headquarters. 503.621.3488
She'll have all the answers you seek. Yes as Lor pointed out, there is a Federal Wildlife refuge that is marked and off limits ANYTIME, but their is also a lot of access to much of the area. But with a lot of rules and timelines.
Karen will have ALL the answers. If your local it might be worth your time to stop by the Headquarters during regular business hours and inquire in person. That way she can show you on the maps and give you a map.
Also lots of the same info on their website on the main ODFW site.

I'm sure there are some LM to be had out their. I know there is panfish...and where there is panfish, there are bass.
You might start with the Gilbert Rvr. Launch and drop you boat in that little Lake on the left as you approach the launch. That would be McNary Lk and you could start there.
Be advised, duck season starts next weekend, after that I don't think you can fish it. But keep that in mind for next year.

Hagg Lake istn to far off and has plenty of fish to catch. Bass Lm&Sm, yellow perch(just try to keep em off) crappie, cats, and of course its stocked 3-4 times a year with rainbows. And with the NW side of the lake a "no-wake zone" its realy a nice spot to go.
