He won't be off the Deschutes for a few more days, but I wanted to post a big, public Thanks to John for putting out a fire next to the railroad tracks just upstream from Beavertail this evening. I was parked on the road, trying with no success to get either radio or satellite phone contact with Central Oregon Dispatch to report a small fire next to the tracks when John floated to the source of the smoke and flames and said he would climb the bank with buckets of river water and put it out. I drove up to the top of Beavertail and reported the fire and the fact that a good samaratin had offered to extinguish it. Thanks to Hunt-man the fire was extiguished.

Ha! I happened to be there and was happy to do it. It would have been so bad if it had spread. I dumped about 15 gallons of water on that railroad tie to get it all the way out, it was burning really good. fill the bucket, balance the bucket, up the cliff, pour the bucket, down the cliff and repeat....
Glad I got to meet you. I think I'll be back in October for another float and this time I'll bring my bucket! :D When are you heading back East?

Thanks for the pats. I was there. I think anyone would have done the same or damn well should have. I was happy to do it. There have been enough big fires on the Lower D this year already.

John, I will be back on the John Day during hunting season. Leave No Trace is, unfortunately, not always a familiar practice on that river in the fall so I have plenty of work that time of year.
Maybe I'll bump into you October 20 on the river. Great day for a birthday!
