I want to try out some new knots and i was wondering if anyone using a loop knot to tie on a fly? Do you use it just for a nymph, or dry as well? Does it seem to lay better in the water, or drift more naturally?

loop knots are great. I use one on most of my larger nymphs, buggers, and streamer patterns.

Its kinda hard to explain, so here are a couple of loop knot illustration links:

Duncan Loop:

Non-Slip Loop Knot:
http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/knots/kreh_mono_loop_knot.aspx

Neither of these are the one that I use, but I can't find a picture of how to tie mine.

Mine is really really simple and I'll try to explain it:

1. tie an overhand knot in your tippet (leave it about the size of a dime to start with)

2. take the tag end and thread it through the eye of the hook (tag end should be about 2-4 inches long)

3. hold the dime-sized loop that you made in step 1 with your thumb and forefinger

4. with your other hand, wrap the tag end over the line 4-5 times

5. take tag end and pass it through the dime-sized loop you made in step one.

6. tighten knot and yer done.

Please excuse my pathetic drawing: (hope it helps)

Thanks for the drawing. I already know how to tie that knot. I will give it a try, do you use this knot for dries too?

The Duncan loop the only way to go on all fisheries you can pull it back the fly will hang natural and when you set the hook it goes tight and it will not slip or come loose! I've used it for 26 yrs of fly fishing and wouldn't change for a minute!:excited:

If the fly is small enough (size 4 or smaller) you can tie it in a perfection loop. Put line through fly, make first loop ahead of fly, make second loop with fly in the middle, make last wrap and use the fly to pull the loop through. Fairly simple, though the Duncan loop may be better.

I use a turl or uni knot depending on what i am fishing for.
i like the turl for most trout fishing because it can be done by feel and in the dark :)

The knot stillwater97 describes is the Open Clinch Knot (much better drawing - sorry Mark!):

This knot and several other loop knots were discussed in another thread:
