The wife set up a play date with a friend of her's whose husband is also a fly fisherman. The idea was that she and her friend would play with our boys on the beach while we fished. Gotta love that right? My only question is where to go? Is there a lake on Hood that would be beneficial to all? This time of year I am usually walking rivers chasing large chrome so I'm not really sure where to go with my float tube and still have fun for the fam. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It would involve another hour in the car, but Maupin is the place you want to take your crew Saturday. River Fest will be held in town at the Oasis River View Campground. Lots of fun activities for kids, like a bouncy inflatable jumpy contraption, pre-reading games and puzzles for kids 1-3, bird program of some sort featuring live birds (raptors, I think), a climbing wall, 5/10k walk/run along the Deschutes, live music, art, craft and flyfishing booths, casting pond, food, fun and great weather.

As for you and your buddy, yesterday I hooked and lost a large steelhead and today I hooked and landed a 23" wild hen. Both were hooked within four miles of downtown Maupin. Fishing isn't red-hot above Sherars Falls yet, but there are a few fish in the usual places.

Thanks Patrick! I wasn't aware of river fest but am very familiar with "the usual spots". I will run this idea up the flag pole and see if it waves!

Were you swinging or skating?

Dry line, swung fly. I usually skate when more fish are present.

clear lake is low now and its shore is sandy so simming is easy lots of the high lakes have rocky shores. They just recently stocked the lake also. We were swiming their several weeks ago and it was 102 degrees and the folks were just hammering the fish casting from shore while we swimed.

Trillium might be a good option too. I usually launch the canoe from the day-use boat ramp, but often see people swimming off to the right, closer to the campground? It's not really a beach. I think there's a trail.

Thanks for the input guys. I think we are going to go to Clear lake. Maupin was my choice but it may be a little too much for just one day with a 9mo old.

Patrick, I may be over there with my brother chasing steel next weekend so I will drop you a line.

tight lines!
