I broke what i'm assuming is the shear pin for my prop today, but didn't try to work on it on the Willy, and wanted to ask for help before tearing into it. It ran fine up the river we stopped for a while at the bank and then when I re started it and put it into gear nothing. It ran fine and was pushing water to the prop but the prop wasn't turning. I didn't hit anything today, but did hit a submerged 2x4 yesterday that may have started the problem. What do you think? Do I remove the keeper nut on the end of the prop to get to the pin? I am a newby, so I want to be sure before I tear into it.

Thanks,
Daryn

If its a shear pin it is behind the propeller and you will have to remove the nut ...
Make sure your kill switch lanyard is off the kill switch so the motor cant start ...
It may be that you spun a rubber hub inside the prop you will be able to tell when the prop is off usually ...
Also check by turning your prop with the motor in gear and the kill switch activated ...
It could also be your shift linkage came undone ... Good luck ...

Well I was finally able to tear into the prop, and soon realized what people mean when they say your best days with a boat are the day you get it and the day you get rid of it :(.

1-My boat doesn't have a shear pin it is Gear driven and help on completely with the keeper nut on the end of the gear drive.

2-I attempted to tear into the lower end until I realized there are more things to remove to get into it than I was wanting to tackle at 6:30 this evening, so I started to play with it and noticed it has a grinding and very sloppy feeling when I spin the gear,(no matter if its in or out of gear) like they are stipped inside.

3-Being a 24 year old motor do you with experience think that it is worth my money to get the one I have repaired completely top to bottom at several hundred dollars or more, or search for a similar sized (15-30 HP) at maybe a lesser price than a repair? I know I will be again taking on another used motor, but also don't want to spend the same amount of $$$ as I would to buy a 5-10 yr old motor.

Any and all suggestions, recommendations, and Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Daryn

Brother trust me when I say " I feel your pain". Almost one year ago my 95 25 horse Merc hit something submerged on the lower willy. Simptoms very close to yours. I took it into Steven's (highly reccomended) and was told I bent the prop shaft, prop and shift linkage needed replacing. Estimated cost $800. I knew it was a great running motor with lots of good hours left and after pricing a used replacement I opted to repair my motor. Why buy a used motor with potential problems when I could fix the one I know? I had to wait to get it into Steven's but they were thorough, exact on estimate and got it bnack to me on time and would stand behind their work if needed. My only question is why does Merc not use a sheer pin? Would have saved me bucks. I really like my Merc other than this. Best of luck.

I just went out and spun my prop, it has a wobble to it :(, not good! I did hit a submerged 2x4 friday, but it ran fine the rest of the day, and upstream on saturday. Weird.

OK so it has taken me a while to reply back about what I found, but i'm a little embarrassed. I took my motor in to one of our mechanics at work to check out my lower unit, he noticed the slight wobble when spinning the prop, so he figured it was a bent shaft. 10 min later he comes in and asks me if I took the cowling off and removed anything, "Nope" he tells me to come on out "I have something to show you" my shift linkage had fallen off :passout::redface::clap::bowdown:, 30 seconds later I should be good to go. Well after getting it back in the water it runs great and even better it only will cost me lunch.
