I have a 1995 25 horse Mercury 2 stroke long shaft motor which I really like and had the top notch team at Steven's tune up for me about one year ago or about three tanks of fuel to put it in perspective. This week at Detroit res, I began having a real tough time accelerating from idle. The motor would just die. I could hear the carb open up the RPM would decrease and motor would stop no matter if I accelerated slow or fast. The motor starts great and will troll at low RPM for hours on end. It is just this initial acceleration. I tried using choke on first notch after slipping her into gear but this did not work after a while. If I could get past this RPM point all was well. It has ran great until this. Good gas, Quicksilver oil. What do you think and what can I try? I', puzzled. Suggestions?

High speed jet in the carb is partly plugged probably with a little lacquer... sometimes you can screw out the metering screw and shoot some carb cleaner or berryman's chemtool down there to melt it out and reinstall screw to former position ...
Before tearing the carb down run some seafoam in the mix through it ...

This is probably the correct thing and what the problem is.
It's very important to run all the gas out of the carburetor when you quit for the day. Some engines have a drain valve for this purpose. If this is done this problem will not happen.
Good Luck

I knew you friendly folks would be able to help. I will work on this today. I have been slacking on running the fuel out at the end of the day. I shall repent.
Thanks again

Update to this is that I ran some "Sea Foam" cleaner through the motor today mixing with gas and running for 20 minutes. Seems to have cleaned out the partly plugged main jet just fine. Will lake test next weekend.
For the past two years I have left fuel line hooked up during summer months never running fuel out. This year I switched to a cheaper 2 cyc;le oil and then had this problem. I went from official Mercury oil to QuickSilver brand which I thought was the same stuff. Regardless I will run out fuel each time now. Thanks again
