I'm headed to Yellowstone for a few days. Just a quick 3 day trip. The plan isn't fishing, it is photography, but since I'm there I wouldn't mind at least spending a couple hours a day fly fishing.

I have no clue where to go, but here is where I'll be.

Thursday- West Yellowstone and Old Faithful area. Geyser and pool photography.
Friday- Geyser area morning, towards Fishing Bridge and then eventually at the South End of Yellowstone Lake.
Saturday- South Yellowstone Lake then headed to Tetons/Jackson area.
Sunday- Morning in Tetons, then catch the flight back.

If anyone knows of some wading areas that make sense, please let me know, either here, or by PM. I'd like to plan on fishing the last couple hours of daylight each day. I could care less about size or species, I'd just like to be able to fish in an area that might be considered a little productive, and hook a fish or two.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Mike

I believe I fished the Gibbon River? It was neat to see the hot springs flowing into to river and walk by a bison on my way up the river.

You can't go wrong with the Gallatin. Just remember you have to purchase a special pass to fish the park.

I'm going to be in the Glacier area this weekend. Any hot spots there?

I would try the madison or the firehole depending on water temps, they are both right off the road between the entrance and old faithful...firehole may be too hot but i bet the madison in the mornings would be a good bet.

Since you will be in West Yellowstone at the beginning of your trip you might check in at Blue Ribbon Fly Shop and get the latest information.

We've had really good luck talking to the locals at some small eateries, just passing the time of day. Some are zipper-lipped but occasionally you get someone who gives up the "secret". Those "secrets" have always proven to be great!!! Actually, there are so many great flyfishing rivers in that area, both in and out of the park...the ole saying comes to mind "too many rivers, too little time"...As most locals will tell you tho the best fishing is little out of the way creeks, etc., but the property owners have sealed access up pretty tight. We've also had pretty good luck just going up and asking for permission. One guy who allowed us to access through his property said "if you hadn't asked, I would have run you off, but since you were polite enough to ask, sure...you can go through my property" We always were very careful not to disturb anything or litter. We always left the area exactly as we found it. (well, except for some great browns, bows)

Enjoy...

Hi Mike,
Moldy Mike here. If I was near West Yellowstone in the next couple weeks I would fish the "barns holes" they are between West Yellowstone and Hebgen lake. Go about a half a mile inside the West entrance and there is a dirt road to the left or North, take it to the place the locals call the "barns holes". From now on thru fall the big spawners come from Hebgen lake to the Madison and stage to spawn. It might be kinda crowded but if you walk downstream a ways thru what they call "beaver meadows" you might find something good! BTW watch for bears and such. Try Streamers, Muddlers and stuff like that and hang on tite!! Fish On!! Mike Horner

I just got back from the Gacier area - didn't do very well. Maybe the rivers and streams there are too clean, not much food?

All we could talk about the whole time is how great the fishing is in Yellowstone. You just can't go wrong anywhere around the Bozeman, Yellowstone area.

Have fun!

The Buffalo Fork just south of the park has great fishing. Head just east of the south entrance on Hwy 26. There will be a road on the North side, before the big RV park that does a loop at the edge of the Bridger Teton wilderness. There are a few small access roads down to the river. I was killing then last year with anything that looks like a grasshopper. Beautiful Snake river Cuts.
