View Full Version : North Umpqua?
Has anyone fished the North Umpqua lately?
We are heading down to Roseberg this weekend and I want to know what kind of flies I should be tying for the trip.
Thanks.

I fished the North Umpqua last month for two solid days. I raised fish on surface skaters and muddler minnows. The only ones I landed were on muddlers (I believe they were tied on #6 hooks). The muddlers were fished just under the surface with a floating line.

I've been doing best with dead drifted unweighted nymphs, mostly Ugly Bugs. Black/orange and golden stone have been the top producers so far. If you roll your own, use heavy wire (Targus 2451 or Mustad 7970) hooks in size 1 or 2 and fish a long leader and a floating line.
Usually, the fish start turning on to big black and/or purple leeches around September 1. I'd bring some of each, along with the Bugs.

Last weekend just up river from Wright Creek bridge, on the N. Umpqua trail side, I caught 3 steelies and land one (released after a kiss and a pic). One caught/landed on a Purple Egg Sucking Leech and the other two on a Green Butt Skunk that I tied. Please keep in mind that the N. Umpqua is a catch and release for trout and native steelhead. The water is perfect right now in depth and clarity, and if you take a pair of polarized binoculars you can usually see some lying in holes from the pull outs on Hwy 138. Good luck to you and keep that tip up!http://www.emeraldwateranglers.com/images/umpqua_steelheadreel2.jpg
