I prefer something with a sealed drag. Have done some research and wanted to see if any Ifishers have had any first hand experience with any of these models. Will be used for chinook in Portland area and coastal rivers including tidewater. If there is another reel you think I should look at please let me know. I want to try to limit the purchase to $250 if possible.

I bought a Lamson Radius 4 for one of my spey rods last month and really like it so far. Sealed drag, machined body and spool, nice finish, and rated for 10/11-wt. lines. They're regularly $229, but Sierra Trading Post and Fly Shop Closeouts both had it on clearance for $138. Great deal on a very nice reel.

I have a Tioga LA Magnum 12 that I fish on my spey rod, and it is awesome! I have a cople other reels (Orvis Mid-Arbor Battenkill and Fly Logic FLO) that are in definite danger of being replaced by Tioga reels. Suffice it to say, I have had exactly ZERO issues with the Tioga.

I also picked up one of the Lamson Radius but go the 3.5 for my 8wt. Nice reel GREAT buy on STP.
If money is no object...Nautalus is the best reel I have ever had the pleasure of fishing. Also look at the Ross Big Game.

I wish money was no object. Wasn't the Ross Big Game discontinued? I found a few online but the price they want is over my budget thru the rest of the year and then some. I still want a few bucks left over to chase some coastal nookie:).

you're right Kevin, my bad. The Ross Big Game is discontinued. I have to say I do like the Lamson though. Bang for the buck is pretty high. Teh drag is very smooth also. I plan to break it in on coho this week!

OK. I'm going with the lamson radius 4.0 if it's still on FSC when I get paid. What's everyones choice of backing for those fall monsters? I was thinking 50lb braid instead of the dacron. I also plan on running a rio anadromous advantage. Should I invest in the spare spool just incase?

I found a reel I realy like. Its a Terry Hayden II. I use it on my 13' 8wt spey. The reel is no frills, tough, fully machined, made for the salt, and has a cork drag that would stop a Nook for sure. sells for around $350. my only complaint is it only clicks on the retrieve. still makes a cool noise when a fish runs....vvv..vvvv..vvvvvvvvv. would hold a 10wt line, and about a million yards of backing.

ps. you can find the reel on TFO's web site.
