View Full Version : Smoking Motor

It seems that both my 40HP Merc 2-stroke and my 6HP Merc 4-stroke have begun to smoke. Oddly enough, they both are worst at idle and improve at higher rpm's. My 40HP has been one of the smoothest running (4-cyl) 2-strokes I've seen. Now, it's running rough and spewing blue smoke. This seems to have started once I was unable to get fuel without ethanol.
I've done the obvious things like change the water separator and plugs, but nothing has yet helped. Is it the ethanol, and if so, what do I do?
Thanks!

Ok. Is it reasonable to assume that ethanol is the likely culprit?
Thanks.

From past posts it sounds like it is , But as I live in California and its not prevalent I have no personal experience with it ...
You can always drain the fuel to put in your car or truck and start over ...
Sounds like you might have an accumulation, of
unburned oil in your motor(s).
You have or are mixing it to high on the oil side.
Like Fishkisser said mix up some Seafoam and run it
out.
It does not sound like an ethenol problem.
You mentioned it runs OK at high RPM and rough at
low, thats an indication of fouled plugs..
It's a 40 so it will troll very well, could you have
forgotten to run it hard going back to the ramp?
