I just bought a boat that has a 2002 8hp Honda manual start on it. This is the first Honda I have ever owned, it is extremely hard to start and is the coldest engine I have ever used, it takes forever to warm up and floods easily when cold. I have owned several Mercs and Yamahas and never had an engine like this, I have put new plugs in it and that does not seem to help. It runs great when its warm I just wondered if this is typical of this motor? I plan to upgrade to a 25 Yamaha this winter but for now this is my emergency motor.
The Honda 8 hp engine is a very good engine. You can replace the thermostat and this should fix the warm up problem. It's a fairly simple job to do. It's important to drain the carburator after you use it. This keeps gas from standing in the Carburator and pluging it up. There is a drain valve there for this purpose.
Any engine will be bad if it is neglected and not taken care of properly.
Good Luck

Thats just not the way that motor should behave at all ...
Are you any good at working on motors ?
If so let us know and we can give you a few places to start looking ...

I agree, i have a honda Accord, a honda Lawnmover (18yrs old!) and a honda generator- None of them behave that way......That honda is newer than the early trolling motors that were notoriously cold blooded.
That motor should not behave like that- tinker with it , dont give up on it:D

Thanks to all who have replied. I own lots of honda motorcycles and atv, they run forever and I am sure their outboards are just as good. I will see what I can do to get it to run better but I am definitely going to get rid of it and get a bigger Yamaha, maybe as early as next week.
Some body is going to get a nice 8 hrs!
This has got to be a gas problem.'1st thing I would check is the bulb
and hose for leaks! Then clean the carb and tighten the fittings.
That motor is a tank!:)

I have a 2003 electric start..., same deal on hard starts and warm up. Replaced the thermostat with the next one up (I believe 60 degrees Celcius was original and now it's a 70 or 72). All problems on starting and warm up disappeared, as did the tendancy to "make oil."

Update... I took the carb apart today along with all the fuel lines and cleaned them with carb cleaner. the problem is gone for now. From what I read online last night on the web they are prone to problems if you do not run them dry after use. It starts first pull now, for now, we will see, either way I need a 20 hp Yamaha for a bigger ikicker but its running great now, thanks for your help,
