Hi guys, new to the site. Just bought my 1st boat 2 weeks ago. Its a 18ft fiberform with a 115hp merc o/b. Took it out to a local lake last weekend and it ran great...for about 30 mins. doing about 35mph and it just bogged down and died, woudn't restart. bought it from a local marina and it ran fine in the tank. I would just like an opinion on why it would stop in mid stride like it did. thx - Jerry

I had a motor, a few years ago, that ran good, in the tank
and in the water for a few. When I stood on in it, pst.
Drove me nuts, small split in the gas line. No pressure!
If you haven't found it yet, look there also.:)

I'm having exactly the same problem with my 1982 115 Mariner inline 6. I've had the carbs and fuel filter rebuilt, replaced a power pack and all new fuel lines replaced. It runs good for some time and then it bogs down when applying throttle. Sometimes it starts running good again. After 2 mechanics working on it I was told by a marina parts guy he had no idea what I could do. They won't work on anything this old.
I appreciate any ideas.
Thanks
Jerry

I had a 115 Mer (97) that would sometimes bog down and then die when I put the throttle down. It wouldn't start until I primered it *a lot*. It turned out to be a fuel issue...both the kicker and the main where plumbed into the main tank via the water seperator/filter housing. The check valve in the primer bulb for the kicker was bad and it scavenge fuel from the kicker, then suck air into the fuel system. Check all fuel lines, primer bulbs, fuel filters. Also make sure the fuel tank vent is clear of any and all obstructions.

If that is not it, start looking at electrical causes. If you are going to do the work yourself, find and buy a real mercury manual for the motor so you can follow the diagnostic steps. It is not hard to do, just takes some time and effort to rule out what it isn't.

Resources I have used in the past on my Merc:

The Steven's Marine Boat Doc thread is a great resource:
http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?p=2159721#post2159721

As well as The marine doctors forum (google it).

Hope this helps.
