Bill and I are in charge of getting my Dad into fish.
He pays for most of our family vacation and this year, it's not in black butte! There are no golf courses! It's fishing!
I really want to make him happy.
So, it is with that cry, that I ask for your zipper lip secrets.
I know longer know how to do it! It used to be that the charter boat would follow us from shrimp bed to shrimp bed! No more!
Can someone help me? I'm hoping that all my old karma will come back to me!
If you want, pm me! :) Please?
I'll only be there for three-four days and I want it to be good! I promise not to tell a soul if you give me a secret!
It used to be Pautzkees and cheese eggs or Velveta... or salmon roe. Now? I have no clue!
Oh yeah, also no more than 2 lb test and tiny little hookses. :) Either that or flies at the South end at night.

Take a look at the thread I had up on Diamond. We did real well when we were there. If the midge hatch is over you should do as well. After reading it let me know if you have specific questions - will be glad to answer.

Go over to the west side to a place called the shrimp beds.
Double anchor the boat, use a 1/4 oz split shot, use 18-24 in leader, I like rainbow power bait, but I think any power bait will work.
You will pull in the weeds from the bottom, you want your bait near the tops of the weeds.
We were there 3 weeks ago so take it with a grain of salt. I had not been there since I was in school 15 years or so. Here is what I found.
First, we did not catch a single fish baitfishing on baits that were not cast. If we dropped it over the side, like the good ole days in the Cheese Hole (which is totally barren of boats), there were no bites. Cast baits were the only way to catch them. 90% of fishermen used powerbait, other 10 worms with marshmallows. Didn't really seem to be much difference. Most of the fishing was 23-26 foot off the T.View boat ramp. This was no secret when we were up as there were probably 30 boats in teh general area. With the warm weather and water temps going up,they may have moved out to deeper waters.
We caught more fish trolling flies than anything else and many of the fish we could not land until we beefed up to 6pound tippet. THey are very fat, heavy fish.
I think there are enough fish in there for you to get plenty, but it might take some experimentations. What worked weeks ago may not work this week.
Good luck and have fun. My dad and I went with my little boy (3 generations, first trip to Diamond) and had a blast.

Jenny,
The south end of the lake was red hot over the 4th. 18-20 ft of water just where the weeds start to show up on the finder. Also you will need a minimum of 4lb test down in those weeds since the fish do a nice job of wrapping you up. Pink and chartruese glitter power bait with at least a 3 ft leader is what worked for us.
If the water has warmed up too much they might be in the 30 ft water just off the main campgroung on the east side of the lake near the boat ramp.
Good luck!:twocents:

Slimey Limey and I were up there last Fri. evening, Sat. and Sunday. We did well and enjoyed it a bunch. (be warned though, the gants are THICK!! They don't bite, just 'bug' you......)
We used power bait. We fished Sherbert, Rainbow and Sherbert extra scent. The extra scent out fished the others, but all caught fish.
A buddy of mine that spent the week up there, also did well fishing nightcrawlers under a slip bobber at 20'.
We fished the northwest side of the lake in about 35' of water, for the most part. We fished the cheese hole for a while, but caught only one fish.
We employ a very high tech, high stress technique. http://s4.images.proboards.com/rolleyes.gif We glob a mess of power bait on a #14 treble about 3' below a #9 egg sinker, drop it to the bottom and let the breeze drift us. Earlier in the year we did best on about 5' leaders, but this trip a bit shorter was the ticket.
On ultra light gear it's a hoot, and those fish are sweet eating trout! http://s4.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
Enjoy!

Troll long lined floating rainbow 7f rapalas along the edge of the shrimp beds, also try thomas bouyant minnows, rainbow or brown trout colors trolled from shrimp beds across towards the lodge. Also have had great success with power bait on the bottom with a slideing egg sinker set up with a 3' - 4' leader with size 12 gold treble hook. Fish this set up along the rock slide wall just east of the lodge. Anchor out 40 yds. from shore and make casts towards shore. Pink lemonade and rainbow worked best for us. Hope this helps. We have been going every year except the year after they poisend the lake for the past 30 years or so. Lots of great memories. Good luck toyou all. Chris

After someone suggested it, I moved a copy of this over here. I am SO not used to having our own trout board! Wheeeeeeee!
And with such awesome people on it! Why didn't I think of it?

Jernnie--- I try to "educate" guys on the main forum to come here for trout and kokanee info but sometimes get flamed for it.
I was there 3 weeks ago and limited in 2 hours trolling an orange apex on 1 side and a worm 4' behind a small silver dodger on the other side on 6lb test line on downriggers 15-20 deep in water 25-40 feet deep all around the middle of the lake. We only lost 1 fish on the troll, a much higher landing rate than most of the power bait guys. All fish were 14-18" and very fat aggressive fighters.

My info is about a month old. At that time we caught a lot on Powerbait (Rainbow, Chart., Orange & Sherbert, not sure color mattered that much. Trebble hook on egg sliding sinker seemed to be the ticket. Caught a bunch that way.
For variety tried worms (nothing), trolling flies (nothing for us but saw some caught), bobber (nothing).
Them planter fishes seems to like the Powerbait so much cause it's the flavor of what "They grew up on" at the hatcheries.
Bring the BUG SPRAY, and camera, I'm sure you'll have a great time. Hope you can share some fish and smile pictures of your trip.
