I went to Wickiup last week and got a sunburn but no kokanee. I was using beer can trollers with kokanee killers, 4oz. of banana lead and no luck at all. I am taking my girlfriend and her 7 year old over there this weekend on sunday/monday. Any information on how to catch these fish would be appreciated. Troll speed, lures, trolling rigs, etc. A picture of a rig would be awesome. Do I need a downrigger for these fish? Which body of water would be the most productive? Again, I appreciate any info I can use to not get skunked again. Thanks.:)

East has been fishing well and if you take the advice from the previous link and drag it around about 28 feet deep you should do well. I was there for 5 days and they were doing pretty well.

Good Luck

I'll be up at Paulina starting tomorrow for 3 days. I'll be jigging up in the NE corner more than likely. Look for a white Duckworth 2 people - 2 dogs.

Thanks for the advice. PM me if you have anything more specific (i.e. pics of rigs). I need to know if not having a downrigger is going to kill my chances. My friends rig was rising quite a bit even with 4 ounces of lead. My Honda trolls down pretty slow, but I was told kokanee like a faster troll. I hated getting skunked. A boat full of kokes(a limit...lol) would be nice.

I fished Paulina for the first time last week for 1 day before moving to Crane Prairie, so this isn't going to be much of a report since I do not know the lake at all. I only caught two fish jigging and lost about 3 more. I thought the fishing was slow and saw a lot of people doing more looking around then catching. I wanted to do a little trolling but never saw any trollers catch any fish so I stayed with jigging. There were a few boats jigging that did better then the rest, not sure what they were using or doing different but it was funny to watch a few boats fishing circles around their boat without even touching a fish. So there must be a few tricks to jigging that separate the top 10 percent from us ordinary folk.

Unless something has changed in the last few days, if your thinking on fishing Paulina try the NE corner, I marked more fish there at 35 to 50 feet deep. I started with a pink and white Gibbs jig first and after a few hours with nothing to show I switched to a Buzz Bomb in pink and silver prism and that worked for the few that I caught.

Oh BTW, everyone I talked with at Crane Prairie said the fishing was slowwwww and I can vouch for that. I fished for 4 to 6 hours each day over 3 days total for trout and bass and only caught 1 bass, but it was the biggest bass I ever caught. In fact last Saturday a Roseburg Bass club had a tournament there and the Saturday winner won with 2lbs 8 ounces, I'm not sure if that was 1 or 2 fish and second place was 1 fish a little over 1lb. I estimate my bass was over 5lbs which would have won on Saturday.

So anyway, have a great trip,

Gregg

You will be fishing a minimum of 30' to be effective and as the day warms you will be hitting 40-50'. I have the most luck with Shasta dodgers chrome w green. Kokanee killers will work periodicly and I usually get my largest fish on them. Last trip (week ago) the hot set up was home made red wedding rings with (2) bronze flashers about an inch apart. I usually use a variety of baits corn being the most effective. Open a can and split it between 3 or 4 baggies. use a different scent in each. Last trip the most effective was crawfish oil with anise followed by predator by procure. Garlic/anise has also been really effective this year. It is easier with two or more rods because you can rotate baits, scents and depth to find the killer combination. Fish the deschutes channel where Davis creek dumps in towards the dam. A good fishfinder will give you an additional edge :twocents:

Hi:

thanks for the good advice. I am new to these waters and trying to learn. Any chance of posting a picture of some of the set ups you are recommending? "Home made wedding rings with (2) bronze flashers about one inch apart."
