Howdy all,
My son and I will be staying at Magone lake out of John Day this fall (Elk hunting) and I have heard that it has good fishing. Only problem is we won't be there till November 8th. I believe trout closes Oct. 31st. I need to check the regs. Anyone fished there recently?
Thanks,
Mike

I went there for a little family outing this past weekend. After the swimmers left, I saw a couple gents in a drift boat fishing right alongside where the dozen or so swimmers had been whooping it up and hour before, and a gal fishing from the bank in the same location. Each were receiving strikes. Only one fish landed that I saw (the lady) with an 8" or so rainbow.

I've flyfished it a few years back on the opposite side and upper end of the lake. Rainbows to about 12" if I recall. Seems like I caught a brookie or two, too, but things are a bit foggy. Age...

Beautiful little spot, though, especially on the hot summer days when it's 15 degrees cooler up there!

I too was there from July 24-27. The lower end of the lake is the deeper end and we caught several with Power Bait off the bottom. I let the wind drift me across the deep part of the lake and got hits every time. There is an old stump sticking up out of the water to the right of the boat launch. Just east of that stump is the deepest part of the lake.

There is a little dock on the upper end of the lake. This is a fish I caught on Friday the 25th.

If you stay in the campground, spot number 4 is my favorite. But, there is a sign there that will be relevant for hunting season...

This was in the middle of Camp site 4. It is about 15' up a fir tree.

I like the campground. Clean, good water, friendly folks...

I haven't fished it for a few years, but as I remember it was pretty good. I don't think that there will be many people there that time of year.
