Just got back from Paulina yesterday and like nws reported in his thread the weather and fishing were great. Managed a limit every day by 11 am and the kokes ran from 11 1/2" to 14" and were really prime. They've had a chance grow a lot in the last couple months and the meat was typically Paulina red. This was Friday mornings' catch:

All fish were caught jigging and the hot time seemed to be from about 7 am until about 11. Some of the campers I spoke to said it really died down during the afternoon but picked up again early evenings. I only used one jig which has been my favorite go-to producer throughout the years. I'm sure other jigs worked just as well but it's best to use what you've got confidence in. This is a 1/2 0z Cabelas' Real Image glow:

Met lots of nice people to share fishing info and tales with and ran into some of the same folks from Crescent Lake a couple of weeks back. This retirement business is mighty good stuff and summer camping and fishing is better than expected.

As for what areas to fish and which techniques...there were two that produced best. When it was calm in the morning wind drifting in water depths between 60' and 90' got the most strikes. Working the jig off the bottom was the best ticket. If they stopped hitting the jig down deep another method worked well. Cast out about 25' from the boat and work it in without retrieving any line. When the jig is up to the boat start stripping line one pull (about three feet) at a time at about 30 second intervals until the jig eventually hits bottom and then repeat. When the fish were suspended off the the bottom the jig would find the sweet area and the fish would hit. As for areas: out from the last bird box on the resort side in about 90' of water was good. Also about half way between the last bird box and the Red Slide. Wind drifting was faster action than anchoring but when the wind came up you can limit out anchored as well.

I usually like to have breakfast before going out but had a (another) senior moment and left the eggs at home in the fridge. Thursday morning caught 4 fish by 9 am so I figured going in and eating a couple then coming back out was a good plan. Pulled the basket out of the water and there were only two fish in it. The wire netting had separated from the rim and two had squeezed through the hole and escaped. Went in and fried up the others and fixed the basket, and fortunately still managed a full limit. The fishing was very good indeed. :excited:

Took this pic off the bridge over the spillway going to the resort. In the middle you can see a big brown and his shadow beneath him. I guessed he weighed 6-7 lbs. Of course if I'd caught and released him he'd have grown to 10 lbs . Anyway he'd found a place for a easy meal because that area is just swarming with chubs. He didn't stay there very long and went back under the cover of the bridge. Never did see him again.

Didn't remember the eggs but campfire steak ain't too bad either. Thursday evening community barbeque. Best of luck everybody!

Thanks for a most excellent report. Probably fished right past you Friday, was trolling in the same area you mentioned. Lots of fish on the screen over there. Sounds like you had a great time as well!

Great report and pics. I have an issue with you though. I never see you in any of your pics. How do we know you are really there.

Sounds like a great time. Retired is what I want to be when I grow up. Maybe next year if I sell the business.

First I have to thank all of you for the PM's and answers to my "Advice...Paulina or East" thread.

We ended up at Paulina rolling in Wednesday afternoon and finding what we considered a prime campsite with a sliver of a view of the lake. I started out trolling which was pretty much fruitless, but found the west shoreline to be putting out fish for those jigging. (I didn't talk to any trollers that were having good success...most were skunked)

It was 1/2 oz pink and white Gibbs minnows fished near the bottom in 60 to 75 feet of water for our regular success. We moved if we went 15 to 20 minutes without a bite. Each move would be answered with at least 2 or 3 quick fish after re-anchoring.

Limits were available with a little work and a few moves.

Late in the evening on Friday, the breeze died down and the fish began to jump. We changed to free floating and the 4 kids I had in the boat were casting and jigging back to the boat with great success.

I am tired of scaling and cleaning kokanee...and that's a good thing.

Thanks again for the advice

G2H

I'm sorry that we never had a chance to meet, G2H. Were you staying in the main campground? Maybe next time...hoping to get back there in a couple of weeks...Dh.

Hope this comes to pass, partner. There's always something lacking during any fishing trip minus your companionship.

Joe and Joe: Okay you two, I'll try to make this so on the next trip sometime in August. Just remember...you asked for it. :)

F-o-B: I'll try to avoid any well deserved vindication by not wearing shorts pants. :D

DH, we were in the main campground in a site just before the boatramp. Had a Lance camper I had taken off of my white chev crew cab, and a white 20 ft North River Scout that I left pulled up next to the ramp by the dock. Add in 4 kids, a yellow lab, and my wife and you have our a picture of our crew.

I must say the folks camping there were very friendly. It was definitely a good choice for us to end up there. And again, thank you all for the suggestions and advice in my other related thread. :applause:

Spent a short weekend at Paulina (got there around noon Saturday and left around 2pm Sunday).

Targeted big Browns for about an hour Sun morning (7/20) with my girlfriend but no luck there so switched to jigging for Kokanee and got 6 in about 2 1/2 hours. It was our first time Kokanee fishing and I used the info and techniques from the board and it worked great :) love this board!

Anyway, most fish were close to the bottom around 40 to 60 feet of water and we had to keep changing jigs, seems they wouldn't hit the same one twice in a row and move if they were't hitting shortly after getting to a spot. Didn't even bother anchoring... just drifted around, very little wind.

Fun weekend but too short!
