Last saturday my mother inlaw (Barbara) said she felt sick/tired, by monday we thought she had the flu bug and by tues noon she was taken to the hospital for abdominal pain....several tests later and 24 hrs,

and a full body CT revealed she had a large blood clot in her left leg, a VERY LARGE clot...that began on saturday...she is paralized on her left side from a car wreck 30 yrs ago, and could not feel the pain in the leg....the clot grew and sent several large clots into the heart, both lungs(making it seem like the flu with labored breathing and being tired) and the main artery that supplies the blood flow to the kidneys, liver, spline etc.

we were called in wed at 4pm with a report she suffered a stoke, but later after a full body CT revealed she had the 4 extremely large clots measured in several inches each...and she has numerous smaller clots spread throughout the body.

by 4pm yesterday, thursday, the doctor said she should have died tuesday, they have no idea how she made it and should have passed, and it's a miracle the clot didn't get to the brain....she now is connected to numerous machines, and large dosages of hepparin and morphine, as without bloodflow to the organs the organs are dying...she is too sick to operate and the surgeons don't think she would survive corrective surgery at this time.

Please say a prayer for Barbara:pray: :flowered:

thank you Dan and Tina

update...she's out of ICU but no change in condition, and now they are worried about the strain on her heart. It's been a long 4 and a half days.

she's a tough gal at a young 60 and continues to fight the fight:pray:

thanks for the prayers, she's one of the good ones.

Barbara, has been through the ringer, but like a timex, she keeps on ticking.

Since the 19th, she has been in and out of ICU numerous times. she has been sent home 6 times with windows of improvement, only to be returned within 36 to 48 hrs.

Friday morning on the 15th of Aug at 4am, she was again back in ICU after a 2 day stay at home. Another CT was ordered as she was having chest pains...the CT was to see where the remaining blood clots are and their proxcimity to the heart. The pains were presumed from yet another clot passing into the lungs.
They decided the need to operate and implant an IVC Filter Placement (Inferior Vena Cava filter) but her condition wouldn't allow the surgery with all the blood thinners.

Today at noon they went ahead with the surgery and she came out with flying colors...The IVC filter is a specially shaped mesh of very thin wires that acts like a strainer for blood. This is placed in the IVC to catch and stop blood clots from causing pulmonary embolism. At this time it was the only option left.

she still needs to undergo surgery for a hole in her heart they found back on the 19th a month ago, but until she is stablized that will have to wait.

We continue to be there for her, and want to thank you for your prayers and concerns. She wanted to come home tonight, but we need the rest at home and felt she needed the extra care as well with professional staff.

She will be comming home again tomorrow and we will continue with home care and in house aid. Hopefully for awhile this time.

I have not been an Ifish member long and do not know many here but I am very sorry to hear of the illness Barbara is going through and I am sure the emotional turmoil you are experiencing as well it is all very overwhelming.

It was very good to read your last post about the turn for the better and possibility of her going home soon. I offer my prayers and thoughts to you and your family.
